Although Capcom delivered a fresh mainline entry with Resident Evil Requiem this year, its remasters continue to generate the most buzz in the franchise. The original classics were groundbreaking at the time, and the company’s advances in technology mean that re‑imagining them with the RE Engine only elevates the experience.
At the recent SGF event, Capcom officially announced that a remake or re‑interpretation of Resident Evil: Veronica is underway, confirming long‑standing speculation that other older titles—most notably Resident Evil 0—are slated for revival.
Information on the RE0 remake remains sparse, but a well‑known leaker, Dusk Golem, revealed that the project was rebooted mid‑development, with Capcom’s flagship studio, Division 1, assuming control. “It got rebooted mid‑dev, and Capcom Div 1 is currently leading it post‑reboot,” the source posted on X.
Division 1, the company’s main studio, is organized into four departments that report directly to Takeuchi. Since Resident Evil 7, this division has overseen virtually every title in the series and spearheaded the development of the highly efficient RE Engine that has powered Capcom’s games since 2017.
When Dusk Golem addressed the growing unease surrounding the team behind the Resident Evil 3 Remake, he clarified that the concern stems more from the game’s tarnished reputation than from the skill of its creators. Knowing that Capcom’s core development squad is steering the project offers a reassuring sense of continuity, given their flawless track record over the past decade.
However, the most consequential factor for the remake’s timeline is the impending reboot. The shift is expected to push the release date back by several months, if not longer. While the RE Engine has historically enabled Capcom to churn out titles at a rapid pace, a reboot inevitably introduces additional layers of complexity that can stall progress.
Despite these hurdles, I remain optimistic that both Zero and Veronica will emerge as landmark titles that redefine the series. The anticipation is palpable, and I eagerly await the next wave of releases from this storied franchise.
