Infinity Ward has announced that the extraction shooter mode DMZ for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will release before the game’s official launch. DMZ becomes available from 20 October for players who pre-order a digital copy.
The studio now effectively has three release dates for Modern Warfare 4. The campaign unlocks on 16 October, DMZ follows four days later on the 20th, and the full launch – when multiplayer will be playable – arrives on 23 October.

While Infinity Ward has offered campaign early access with other Modern Warfare titles in the past, doing the same for a mode like DMZ is new. The move could let DMZ capture streamers and build excitement ahead of release over an entire week.
Because DMZ has its own separate progression, players who jump in early could potentially have an advantage at launch if they accrue many items, along with the map knowledge gained from spending more time playing.
The playlist you saw is a developer playlist that was never intended to be for public use, it lets our team load into a match alone to work. In the shipping game, players choose to be solo by turning off squad fill, but it’s not guaranteed to be only solos in that lobby.

The developer made those comments in response to questions about whether DMZ had been played in a dev-only context. One observer noted they were unimpressed: though Single Squad could obviously be a dev-only mode, such modes typically do not require bespoke icons. It was also pointed out that Infinity Ward did not blur an image covering part of it, which is commonly done in behind-the-scenes gameplay footage.
Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on 23 October on PC, PS5, Xbox Seri X/S and Switch 2.
