Call of Duty: Warzone Officially Abandoning PS4 and Xbox One as Modern Warfare 4 Launches

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Call of Duty: Warzone is officially ending its support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the free-to-play battle royale title being pulled from last-generation consoles shortly after the launch of Modern Warfare 4 season 1. The move, announced by Activision in May alongside the reveal of the next mainline entry, lands as the flagship shooter debuts on October 23, and marks a decisive step in the franchise’s shift toward current-generation platforms. Warzone will remain fully playable on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, while the PS4 and Xbox One versions lose both new downloads and the in-game store.

The decision reflects a broader strategy across the Call of Duty ecosystem, as this year’s mainline game is also abandoning last-gen hardware. Modern Warfare 4 is bound for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, signaling Activision’s commitment to current-generation and next-gen systems over the aging PS4 and Xbox One install base. For players on those platforms, the transition is gradual rather than abrupt: existing owners can continue playing Warzone until season 1 of Modern Warfare 4 arrives, giving the community time to migrate to current-gen systems before the experience is fully retired.

A Connected Experience Between Two Titles

According to a post attributed to Call of Duty Staff, the shutdown is not a simple removal but a deliberate integration. Beginning with season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, Warzone will “integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression as part of a connected experience between both titles.” This means the battle royale experience will continue to evolve on current-gen platforms, drawing in new weapons, maps, and seasonal updates tied directly to the mainline campaign’s release cycle.

Even as the PS4 and Xbox One storefronts close, Activision has assured players that their accounts will not be left empty-handed. In June, the in-game store for Warzone on those platforms will be removed, but players will still be able to progress through free Battle Pass tiers. This includes unlocking new weapons across the remaining Black Ops 7 seasons, ensuring that last-gen players retain a meaningful, if diminished, connection to the live-service content pipeline.

A Franchise in Constant Reinvention

The end of Warzone on last-gen consoles is part of a longer arc of reinvention for the franchise’s battle royale offering. Call of Duty: Warzone originally launched in 2020 as a free-to-play battle royale set within the Call of Duty universe. That initial iteration was eventually retired in 2023, after its successor, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, took over the spotlight. The 2022 release ultimately shed its “2.0” branding to become simply Call of Duty: Warzone, consolidating the franchise’s identity around a single, evolving live-service platform.

Each cycle has followed a similar pattern of consolidation and platform focus, with Activision increasingly concentrating resources on the most active hardware generations. The departure from PS4 and Xbox One aligns with industry-wide trends as developers prioritize current-gen performance, next-gen features, and the expanding installed base of modern consoles and PCs.

Looking Ahead

For the Call of Duty community, the October 23 launch of Modern Warfare 4 represents both an opportunity and a transition point. Players on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X can look forward to a Warzone experience tightly woven into the mainline game’s content, while those on last-gen systems must plan their migration before the final season 1 cutoff. Activision’s approach suggests the future of the franchise’s multiplayer and battle royale offerings will be defined by cross-title integration and current-generation fidelity, leaving the aging PS4 and Xbox One versions as a closed chapter in the Warzone saga.
