Call of Duty: Warzone Adds Long-Requested Skin Toggle to Hide Silly Crossover Skins

When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives later this October, it will bring a first-of-its-kind feature to the franchise’s battle royale spin-off Warzone: a toggle letting players hide the silly, odd crossover skins carried over from past CoD titles. Announced on September 24, the new “Operator Skin toggle” gives players control over whether they want to see cosmetic items from older games, marking a significant shift in how the series handles its shared cosmetic economy. The option is off by default, and Activision says it will apply across matches and lobbies to enemies, friends, and squad mates alike.

The feature builds on the existing “Carry Forward” system, which has allowed players to bring previously earned skins and cosmetics from past Call of Duty games into Warzone. Now, however, players who find themselves surrounded by wacky characters can turn off the visibility of those older skins. When activated, the toggle replaces any operators or skins from previous titles—such as Black Ops 6—with default MW4-appropriate cosmetics on the viewer’s end. Crucially, the setting does not hide your own skin from you: if you own a goofy character and join a session where the toggle is on, other players will see you as a generic soldier, but you’ll still see yourself as your chosen character on your own screen.

How the Toggle Works

Activision explained that the new setting is designed to support both camps of players without forcing a one-size-fits-all solution. The company noted that the toggle will not affect the underlying value of skins or the “Carry Forward” system itself—it simply changes what other players render on your screen. Because the feature is disabled by default, existing players will not see any immediate change to their current experience, while those who want a cleaner, more consistent visual environment can opt in.

Both Battlefield and Call of Duty have been forced to address player concerns about silly skins, though this is the first time either franchise has shipped an actual skin toggle—an option fans have long requested but many assumed would never materialize. The concern was that allowing players to hide skins could diminish their perceived value, since others could simply turn them off. It appears Activision has weighed that calculus and, likely eager to recover from last year’s widely criticized Black Ops 7 and a broader sense of franchise fatigue, has decided to add the toggle to Warzone later this year.

Looking Ahead

The open question now is what happens if Modern Warfare 4 itself introduces silly skins. Activision’s blog only confirms that MW4 skins will remain visible with the toggle enabled, leaving the mechanics of the filter in that scenario unexplained. The publisher has claimed that goofy skins like Stan from American Dad are “not in the cards” for MW4, but as with every franchise, promises are only as reliable as the next patch.

For now, the skin toggle represents a rare concession to player agency in a series historically resistant to such changes. Whether it becomes a widely adopted setting or remains a niche option remains to be seen, but its inclusion signals that Activision is listening—at least enough to offer a switch.
