Bungie has officially released a roadmap for Marathon, the extraction shooter that has struggled to find its footing since its March 2026 launch, promising a slate of new game modes designed to win back players and ease newcomers into the franchise’s signature extraction gameplay. Posted on Twitter today, the plan details a team deathmatch mode, new player-versus-environment experiences reminiscent of Destiny, and an expanded tutorial zone, signaling a deliberate effort to diversify the game’s offerings beyond the divisive extraction format that defined its debut.
Marathon has faced a rocky start, and the studio’s response appears aimed squarely at reducing the friction that has alienated both returning and new players. Previously, Bungie teased that new game modes were on the way and even shipped an experimental iteration through Vault Breaker, a mode that has since become a point of contention within the community. Today’s announcement expands on those early hints, confirming that the extraction modes the game launched with will remain intact while a broader suite of options takes shape.
Diversifying Beyond Extraction
The core philosophy behind the update is accessibility. Bungie’s stated goal is to limit the friction that new players feel and let them self-select into gameplay types they’re more comfortable with, theoretically making the traditional extraction mode—which has proven so divisive—more approachable over time. To that end, the studio plans to expand Perimeter, its tutorial level, to a scope closer to the full zones players encounter elsewhere in the game, giving newcomers a gentler on-ramp before they dive into the more punishing content.
Bungie wouldn’t be what it is today without it. It’s the foundation upon which everything else rests, and we are absolutely not done with Destiny.

The community’s response to the announcement has been cautiously optimistic. After months of underwhelming content and a divisive extraction loop, players have been hungry for change, and the promise of team deathmatch and Destiny-style PvE has given the fanbase reason to hope. Technical details remain sparse, however, with Bungie signaling that it will share more about the Symbiosis update as it approaches.
Looking Ahead
All of this new content and game modes aren’t going to arrive at once. In its post, Bungie laid out a phased roadmap, with a Nightfall refresh coming first in October. Then, in December
