A fan project attempting to port the original Destiny to PC has drawn a surprising response from Bungie. Modders working on the effort, known as Project Golden Age, have reportedly caught the studio’s attention without receiving a takedown notice.

YouTuber Flummoxed has been sharing progress updates on the project and recently posted footage showing various parts of Destiny 1 running on PC at 4K resolution at well over 60fps. The footage features a wider field of view than the console version, suggesting the build has been upgraded compared to its PS4 and Xbox One counterparts.

The latest video was shared widely throughout the Destiny community and appears to have earned something of a nod from Bungie. Josh Deane, studio head of product and Marathon general manager, commented on the footage on X, jokingly writing: “Seems like a pretty game, wonder if it will do well…”

The report notes that Deane’s reaction should be taken with caution and not jumped to conclusions. This is not confirmation of a Destiny 1 revival within Bungie, and the author suggests it would be surprising if Sony does not issue DMCA takedowns soon.

Destiny 1 project, which aims to port the game to PC, seemingly gets a nod from Bungie boss

Deane was recently featured in a Bungie apology video in which the studio’s new leadership, including Deane, vowed to restore Destiny 2 content that has been removed over the years.

The report considers how understaffed Bungie appears to be and notes it must split its attention between Destiny 2 and Marathon. On this basis, a Destiny 1 release on PC is described as unlikely to feature on the studio’s current list of priorities.

As for the project itself, Project Golden Age works backwards from client and server requests and responses to essentially rebuild the game. Fan projects have utilised similar techniques in the past to keep servers running for online-only games after their shutdowns, such as Anthem. The project appears to use generative AI, with Claude’s markdown tool mentioned on the project’s GitLab page.

The end result is not perfect yet, with a few physics and rendering issues, but it represents what the report describes as the closest thing available to Destiny 1 on PC.
