The chainsaw-wielding, one-liner-spewing hero we all know and love is officially hanging up his hat. Bruce Campbell, the iconic actor who brought Ash Williams to life in Evil Dead, has confirmed that he will no longer be reprising the role, marking a definitive end to an era for fans of the franchise.
The End of an Era for Ash
In a recent interview with Screen Rant“>Screen Rant, Campbell definitively stated that “Ash is done.” This means no more appearances, not even voiceover work in animated projects. He acknowledged that the creative team will need to find a sound-alike or explore alternative solutions for future iterations of the character. While disappointing news for many, it’s perhaps not entirely unexpected given Ash’s diminishing presence at the forefront of the Evil Dead universe in recent years.
Campbell explained his reduced involvement with Evil Dead Rise, the most recent film in the series, citing his focus on directing his own movie, Ernie and Emma. He also indicated that his role in Evil Dead: Wrath of Ruth, where he will hold an executive producer credit, will be similarly limited. This suggests a conscious decision to prioritize his personal projects over further commitments to the franchise.
“It really boils down to that: spending time in another country working on somebody else’s movie, or spending time in your hometown working on your own movie? It wasn’t a hard choice, you know what I mean?” Campbell told Screen Rant. “When I didn’t have to actually work on the Evil Dead movies, they’re still optional, and because they’re optional, I just opted out. I just said, ‘I’m making a movie. I got to go make this movie, and I got to make this movie for as many years as it takes, because after this run at Alamo Drafthouse, I’m going to theoretically jump to another tour.'”
Campbell’s association with Evil Dead dates back to its inception in 1981 with the original film, The Evil Dead. His close friendship and collaboration with director Sam Raimi led to his memorable appearances in Raimi’s Spider-Man films and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While Ash’s role has evolved over time, reflecting a shift towards exploring other characters and narratives within the Evil Dead universe, many fans had hoped for continued appearances. However, it appears Campbell is now focused on pursuing new creative endeavors.
Earlier this year, Campbell also revealed that he had been diagnosed with a “treatable” but not “curable” cancer. It’s possible that this diagnosis has influenced his decision to prioritize other aspects of his life and pursue opportunities that allow him to make the most of his time.
