BlizzCon Returns After Three-Year Hiatus With Bold Announcements and an Uncertain Vibe

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

After a three-year absence, Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon returned last weekend to deliver an “absolute ton of news,” unveiling major new releases across StarCraft, Diablo, and World of Warcraft alongside a surprise update for the dormant Heroes of the Storm. The convention, which has not been held since 2022, gave the studio a stage to reveal ambitious projects — including the first expansion for Warcraft 3 in 23 years — while its president, Johanna Faries, delivered an emotionally charged opening address that hinted at broader uncertainty surrounding the game industry and its parent company, Xbox.

While the event was defined by a wave of announcements, the standout moment was undoubtedly WoW Forever, a concept that reimagines the original 2004 World of Warcraft with a fixed progression ceiling and modernizations the main game may never receive. The project has drawn interest from both veteran players and newcomers, with anecdotal reports suggesting that players with no prior history are being pulled toward its blank-slate design and unapologetically throwback gameplay. Notably, the experience can even be played with a gamepad, broadening its accessibility.

A Convention of Bold Moves

Blizzard’s strategy at BlizzCon leaned heavily into early reveals and concrete release dates for titles that had previously been shrouded in secrecy. The studio announced Diablo 5 and a StarCraft shooter remarkably early, even pinning down release dates — a move that has drawn speculation about the pressures shaping the company’s roadmap. Diablo 4 fans were particularly stunned to learn the game will have a six-year lifespan, roughly half the usual run for a Diablo title, despite its commercial success. There’s clearly something odd going on there that might be related to Xbox’s reported forced march on big franchises. StarCraft’s reveal may have a different motivation, perhaps convincingly shopping the franchise to film and television producers. Or, as project lead Dan Hay put it to Polygon’s Mike McWhertor, the goal is simply to make it feel real to both developers and fans.

“The aim is to make it feel real — to both developers and fans.”

James Yen, project lead

Amid the spectacle, Polygon’s Tomas Franzese spoke with Diablo 5’s lead writer Jennifer Hepler, a BioWare veteran who previously endured significant harassment from the Dragon Age fanbase. Her return to such a high-profile title was noted as a positive development. Franzese also talked to James Yen, a Blizzard producer who began his career as a game master for World of Warcraft and is now tasked with reviving Heroes of the Storm. His story reminded me of my chat with Matthew Cederquist, a former WoW developer who now oversees the legacy Diablo games and pitched this year’s Reign of the Warlock expansion for Diablo 2.

These conversations underscored a recurring theme: despite criticism of how Blizzard is managed, the studio’s developers clearly harbor a deep affection for the company’s heritage, and there appears to be management-level intent to preserve, curate, and share that legacy with fans. Sometimes that takes the form of a new hero for Heroes of the Storm; sometimes it ends up in a project like WoW Forever, which imagines a different structure for MMOs. Sometimes, looking back can lead to a new way forward.

Looking Ahead

As BlizzCon wound down, the focus shifted to what these announcements mean for the future. The WoW Forever project represents a genuine attempt to reimagine the MMO structure, while the early Diablo 5 and StarCraft reveals signal a more aggressive release cadence. Whether these moves reflect genuine creative ambition or external pressure remains to be seen, but the event has left fans with a clearer picture of Blizzard’s direction — and a renewed sense that the studio’s love for its own catalog is very much alive.
