After BlizzCon 2026 concluded this past Sunday, the future of Blizzard’s flagship convention remains uncertain, with no clear indication that the event will return in 2027. During closing remarks, Blizzard president Johanna Faries told attendees: “We have so much more in store, so keep your eyes on Blizzard.” She then offered a standard farewell before adding only, “Until next BlizzCon, thank you everybody. Take care.” The phrasing left the timing of the next convention ambiguous, and when contacted Tuesday to confirm whether an event would take place the following year, Blizzard had not yet responded.

This ambiguity marks a notable departure from the era when BlizzCon operated as a reliable annual gathering. From 2005 through 2019, the convention took place nearly every year, with only 2006 and 2012 skipped. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the schedule in 2020, forcing 2021 to move entirely online. That event was also skipped in 2022 amid a major harassment scandal and lawsuit against the company, before returning as an in-person gathering in 2023.

A Seven-Year Shift Away from Annual Gatherings

After 2023, many assumed BlizzCon would return to its traditional yearly cadence. Instead, Blizzard skipped both 2024 and 2025 following the company’s acquisition by Microsoft before returning with a strong showing this year. The pattern means the convention has not been held annually in seven years, which may explain why the absence of a firm commitment drew less surprise than it might have a decade ago.

The lack of a “See you next year” promise at the end of BlizzCon 2026 effectively closes an era in which Blizzard reliably had enough content to justify gathering thousands of fans every single year, along with the budget and support required to do so. The company’s closing remarks signaled that future appearances will be driven by what is worth showcasing rather than a fixed calendar.

The broader industry context makes the shift understandable. Very few publishers still run annual conventions for their games today, with events like QuakeCon and Tennocon standing out as rare exceptions. With Microsoft’s Xbox division facing ongoing uncertainty, the pressure on Blizzard to fill every keynote with meaningful announcements has grown considerably. Games are also taking longer to develop than ever before.

This reality may explain why Blizzard moved so eagerly to showcase Diablo 5 and StarCraft ahead of everyone this year. The studio acknowledged it may not have another opportunity like this until both titles approach release, underscoring how the convention’s role has evolved from a predictable annual celebration into an opportunistic platform for major reveals.

Looking Ahead

As for when fans might see BlizzCon again, Blizzard’s position is that the next event will be “ready when it’s ready,” language the company historically used to describe its games even as it announced firm release windows three to four years out for Diablo 5 and StarCraft. The timing remains open-ended, reflecting a studio navigating an unpredictable market.
