Bit Reactor, the studio behind the critically acclaimed tactical shooter Star Wars Zero Company, has begun bringing back a portion of its workforce after furloughing an estimated 80% of employees just before the game’s launch in August 2026. CEO Greg Foertsch revealed the development in a public post on October 7, describing the return of staff as a crucial milestone in the studio’s ongoing commitment to continuing support for the title.

“Having to ask team members to step away after we navigated unexpected business developments outside of our control and so close to launch was an incredibly difficult decision,” Foertsch wrote. “This team means a tremendous amount to me, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together.”

A Gradual Return to Full Strength

According to sources familiar with the situation who spoke with GameFile, Bit Reactor’s payrolled staff now account for more than half of what it had been ahead of the furloughs. That figure leaves a sizeable chunk of previously furloughed employees still off payroll and without pay as the studio works to rebuild its roster.

Foertsch framed the partial return as an “important step forward” in the studio’s continued support for Star Wars Zero Company, adding that the team looks forward to sharing more updates about the game soon. He noted that bringing staff members back was intended to help the studio eventually bring back as many people as possible.

“Thank you to our fans for the incredible response to the game and for supporting us along this journey.”

A Game Acclaimed by Critics

The studio’s efforts come on the heels of a strong launch for Star Wars Zero Company, which arrived in August 2026 to rave reviews. IGN’s own reviewers awarded the game a sparkling nine out of 10, praising it as an excellent tactical game that does a fantastic job of slathering on the same cinematic look and feel seen in Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi games.

The review highlighted strong characters and a storyline refreshingly centered on non-Force users and a non-traditional villain, distinguishing the title within an increasingly crowded field of licensed shooters. Despite that critical success, however, much of Bit Reactor’s staff were placed on leave without pay just before launch, with reports indicating around 80% of employees were affected.

A Recurring Industry Trend

The furloughs underscore a troubling pattern within game development, where studios routinely lean on unpaid or temporary layoffs even after delivering acclaimed titles. The trend has become so pervasive that developers on Gears of War: E-Day recently expressed being overcome with worry that they would be laid off after crunching hard to get their game out on time.

For Bit Reactor, the situation is compounded by a series of revelations about Zero Company’s troubled development. Earlier this year, GameFile uncovered legal documents revealing that the game was initially pitched as a title within the Titanfall universe, with specific connections to Apex Legends. That pitch ultimately did not go through, though it remains intriguing enough to speculate on what such a crossover might have looked like had it been realized.

The studio’s leadership has repeatedly pointed to circumstances beyond its control when explaining the furloughs, and Foertsch stressed that the return of staff signals renewed stability. Fans who rallied behind Zero Company during its launch will be watching closely as Bit Reactor attempts to restore confidence in both the game’s future and the wellbeing of its workforce.

Looking Ahead

With more than half of its former workforce now back on payroll, Bit Reactor has signaled that it intends to continue rebuilding toward full strength. Foertsch indicated that the studio is working toward bringing as many people back as possible and teased further updates about Star Wars Zero Company soon.

As the developer navigates these unexpected business developments, all eyes will be on how quickly Bit Reactor can restore its roster and deliver on the promises made to a fanbase that embraced the game from day one. For now, the studio’s leadership insists this partial return marks only the beginning of a longer road back.
