Ben Affleck’s crime thriller Animals, which he directed and co-wrote, has become the most-streamed film on Netflix worldwide, dominating viewing charts across much of the globe despite being panned by critics.
According to a report for Polygon, the L.A.-set film — also starring Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, and Steven Yeun — is currently the number one movie on Netflix globally. Streaming tracking site FlixPatrol reports that Animals tops the Netflix charts in all but 14 of the 93 countries it tracks.

It happened with The Whisper Man
The film follows a pattern seen recently with other low-marketed streaming releases, such as it happened with The Whisper Man, starring Robert De Niro. This week, however, the spotlight falls on Affleck’s Animals.
The site tracks Netflix viewership across 93 countries. In most of them, viewers were watching FlixPatrol-tracked titles — but in Poland, audiences instead favored Less of a Stranger, a biopic about local rock legend Jan Borysewicz, founder of the band Lady Pank.
the current Disney Plus chart-topper
Whether Animals was also the top film across all streaming platforms remains unclear, as streaming companies do not publish comparable data. Given Netflix’s global reach, it is considered extremely likely to hold that position — with the current Disney Plus chart-topper, Toy Story 5, seen as its only real competitor.
Affleck remains a household name, so the film’s worldwide popularity comes as little surprise. But it is notable given the harsh critical reception the movie has received — currently sitting at 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience response was similarly lukewarm, with a Popcornometer rating of just 41%.
Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri called Animals “a catastrophe,” writing that it “begins awkwardly, proceeds chaotically, and ends ludicrously.” Regardless, audiences continued to stream the film in large numbers — a result at least better than Other Mommy.
