In Battleplan, a new World War II real-time strategy game from Foolish Mortals Giochi, players issue orders by drawing directly on a large pseudo-paper map built from geographical survey data. Instead of controlling units directly, soldiers, tanks, aircraft and artillery then attempt to turn those hand-drawn sketches into actual territory.

The studio behind the title is also known as co-creator of Kaiju Wars. According to its Steam page, each division in Battleplan is “realistically modeled with headquarters, regiments, battalions and companies,” allowing players to customize the chain of command and order of battle across their entire army—combining divisions into corps or splitting units into companies.

The developers note that drawing carries real nuance beyond simply sketching a target: players can attempt curved breakthrough attacks, planned withdrawals, preparatory bombing runs, reconnaissance and counterattacks. Throughout a campaign, forces can be requisitioned and upgraded, officers hired for advice of varying soundness, and units developed into veterans.

The launch version features a single-player campaign comprising 11 historical missions spanning the D-Day landings to Operation Varsity, along with tutorial levels, all set on the Western Front. The studio says it plans to expand Battleplan after launch with new system updates, gameplay improvements and additional theatres of war.

Battleplan is available now on Steam.
