Creepy space horror Mouthwashing became something of an indie sensation when it launched back in 2024. After racking up over 500,000 Steam sales, publisher Critical Reflex announced that a Switch version was in the works and now (a year on from that announcement), we finally have a release date.
As revealed in yesterday’s Xbox Showcase, Mouthwashing will launch on the Switch eShop on 29th October — yep, as in next week. It’s already available to pre-order on the North American storefront, in fact, for $12.99. We’ve noticed that the store lists its release date as 10th October, but we’re sure that’s just a typo (we’ve reached out to Critical Reflex just to double-check). [Update: Yes, it is just a typo, and yes, Critical Reflex is fixing it]
For those who missed this one a couple of years back, Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game about the slowly dying crew of a stranded space freighter. Jolly. We won’t give away too much more here, but expect paranoia, gruesome scares, and the horror of the never-ending expanse of space. Not a lot of laughs, then.
The game was mightily well received at launch, picking up both Best Narrative and Players’ Choice trophies at The Horror Game Awards, and some big nominations at The Indie Game Awards, the Annual D.I.C.E. Awards and more.
Here’s a brief rundown of its features and a handful of screenshots:
Descend into Madness: Follow the lives of the crew as they endure starvation, isolation, and the strain of dealing with each other. The ship will be out of power in six months, with food rations running out even sooner.
Immersive Storytelling: Stay sharp and pay attention to every detail around you.
Unforgiving Narrative: Hope to die, or for goodness sake, pray that everyone else did.
Psychological Horror: Can you trust what you see? Your eyes might be lying.
This month may already be royally stacked on the game release front, but we struggle to think of a title more deserving of the Halloween window.
