According to a report from IGN, the ASUS Xbox ROG Ally X20 handheld gaming PC has officially launched, with Best Buy currently holding stock and shipping units immediately for $1,299.99.
Preorders first opened in August in the United States through only two retailers – Best Buy and the ASUS eShop. IGN’s Jackie Thomas reviewed an early unit and gave it a positive assessment.
The ASUS Xbox ROG Ally X20 Ships Now
The new model upgrades over its predecessor, the Xbox Ally X, across several areas. It features a transparent black shell with gold menu buttons, a 7.4-inch OLED display rated at 1,400 nits of brightness, and MicroSD Express card storage expansion.
Other changes include DisplayPort 2.1 support on the second USB-C port, TMR drift-resistant joysticks that IGN describes as better than Hall Effect models with domed ABXY buttons, a pull-out rotating D-pad that switches between 4-way and 8-way modes, redesigned impulse triggers with haptic feedback, and rubberized anti-slip textured grips.
The Xbox Ally X20 Remains Among the Most Powerful Handheld PCs
Internally, the Xbox Ally X20 is nearly identical to the Xbox Ally X. It keeps the latest-generation AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a 1TB SSD, making it the most powerful Ryzen-based handheld available.
According to IGN’s reporting, it performs significantly better than the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, Z2 A and Z2 Go variants. It runs Windows with an Xbox user interface; users could install Steam OS themselves to convert it into a Steam Deck-style device, though IGN’s Jackie Thomas recommends getting the Xbox Ally (and Ally X) over a Steam Deck.
The Xbox Ally X Available for Over $400 Less
Best Buy is offering an unusually large discount on open-box Asus ROG Xbox Ally X handheld gaming PCs. Rather than paying the $1,000 retail price, buyers can get a “Fair Condition” model for as little as $789.99.
The units are Geek Squad-verified preowned models that come with a 15-day return policy. IGN’s commerce manager recommends the better-graded “Excellent Condition” model at $849.99, describing it as being in like-new condition both functionally and cosmetically with very low usage time; those units may also include most or all of the original warranty.
