Embark Studios, the team behind the adrenaline-fueled extraction shooter Arc Raiders, has announced a significant shakeup to its post-launch roadmap. All future Expeditions are being delayed until early 2027, accompanied by a temporary pause for weekly Trials. While this move aims to address long-standing community concerns and deliver “major improvements,” it’s left many players wondering if the risks outweigh the rewards.

A Break in the Rust Belt
In an update posted on the Arc Raiders website, Embark acknowledged that Expeditions, a late-game mechanic allowing players to reset their progress with some persistent bonuses, have been under scrutiny. The studio stated they’re pausing Expeditions and Trials starting September 22, 2026, until October 8, and Expeditions won’t return until early 2027. This means a temporary lull in the intense gameplay loop that has kept players engaged since the game’s launch in October 2025.

Addressing Player Pain Points
“We have been carefully reviewing your feedback on Expeditions,” the studio explained. “While we’ve made ongoing improvements along the way, we’ve come to realize that some of the issues you’ve raised, like the tight departure windows, the reward structure, and accessibility for new players, need more than incremental fixes. They call for bigger changes.”

To tackle these concerns, Embark is taking a bold step: pausing Expeditions entirely. The fifth Expedition will be the last until early 2027, when they’re slated to return with significant enhancements designed to address some of the most pressing player complaints. Players who have completed all Expeditions will receive the Zenith outfit, while those with partially completed Caravans will receive Ermal Vouchers for future offers.
A Risky Gamble?
The decision to pause Expeditions is a significant one. For many players, Expeditions represent the pinnacle of Arc Raiders’ progression system, offering a fresh start and a chance to master new builds. Removing this core element, even temporarily, carries the risk of alienating a dedicated player base.

“Removing the only progression system in the game (albeit a shallow one) is a risky choice,” one fan said. “But if it’s what has to be done to improve Expeditions so be it. But if it’s not drastically changed in some extremely rewarding way, I’m not sure what else they can do after that.”

Another player added, “400+ hours topside and haven’t touched this game in months. You guys have one of the best games ever made and you keep dropping the ball. It’s unplayable in its current state. Hoping for a huge October surprise, but not holding my breath.”

The upcoming “Frozen Trail” update, slated for October, was initially touted as the studio’s biggest yet, promising a new map and significant gameplay changes. However, given the recent announcement, many players are now cautiously optimistic, hoping that the promised improvements will justify the temporary disruption.
A Two-Year Wait?
The decision to pause Expeditions comes on the heels of another recent change: Embark’s commitment to releasing only two major updates per year. While this may seem infrequent for a live-service game, it underscores the studio’s focus on quality over quantity.
Whether this strategic shift will ultimately resonate with players remains to be seen. The next few months will be crucial in determining whether Embark can deliver on its promises and reignite the passion of its dedicated fanbase. Only time will tell if this bold move pays off, or if Arc Raiders will continue its slow decline.
