Amazon Reconsiders Sending Bond on New Adventure, Prefers IOI’s First Light

Following a recent statement from Amazon Game Studios chief Jeff Gattis, it has become clear that IO Interactive will no longer be developing the upcoming 007 titles or any new Bond trilogy. Gattis explained that Amazon does not possess “full rights” to 007 First Light, as the license had already been granted to IO Interactive before Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, the parent company of the Bond franchise. Consequently, any future Bond projects will be overseen by MGM, with Amazon Game Studios potentially involved on a theoretical basis.

The announcement sparked an immediate and passionate response from the gaming community. Fans accused Amazon of repeating past mistakes in the video game sector, lamenting the loss of a developer they had invested heavily in. A Reddit user expressed sympathy for IO Interactive, noting the frustration of pouring resources into a project only to have the license rescinded.

While I remain hopeful that IO Interactive will resolve its standing with Amazon and continue to contribute to future Bond adventures, the news is disheartening. Amazon’s position as a global powerhouse with the capacity to develop games in-house makes the decision to sideline a talented studio like IO Interactive all the more striking.

At least IO Interactive is not being shut down entirely; the studio can still focus on original IPs and explore other gaming universes, ensuring its creative output continues beyond the Bond franchise.
