Amazon MGM is preparing to return to the Spider-Man universe with one of comics’ most divisive storylines. According to a Tuesday report from Deadline, the studio is “closing in on an order for a new series” built around the Clone Saga, the 1990s comic arc that upended Spider-Man canon. The project arrives just weeks after Amazon MGM canceled the Nic Cage-led Spider-Noir Prime Video series, though the studio made clear it intends to keep developing new Spider-Man content in partnership with Sony, which holds the screen rights to the character.
Despite positive reviews, Amazon MGM canceled Spider-Noir earlier this month. At the time, Deadline reported that Amazon and Sony were still ideating and developing additional Spider-projects, and the studio has now revealed which one takes the stage next.
A Controversial Arc Comes to Television
The Clone Saga is one of the most debated chapters in Spider-Man history. The clone Ben Reilly first appeared as a throwaway character in the 1970s before being resurrected in the ’90s, where a controversial decision revealed that Ben was the original person and Peter Parker the clone. Marvel quickly reversed the change, but the storyline left a lasting mark on the character’s mythology. The saga also introduced Kaine Parker, a flawed clone who served as an antagonist. Ben and Kaine will anchor the new TV series as its protagonists.

Deadline’s sources offered conflicting details about the show’s direction. Some reported the series would follow Ben and Kaine as they come to grips with their clone identities while tangling with other clones.
