Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror masterpiece Psycho is now available to stream on Netflix, marking the film’s return to the platform 66 years after its original release.

The report comes as part of a broader reflection on why certain classics fail to live up to their reputation when viewed for the first time. According to Gamer24h, some older films simply don’t hold up against modern pacing and filmmaking techniques — but Psycho, it argues, is not one of them.

“Especially for a first-time viewer,” the report states, “Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror masterpiece is still wildly entertaining and keeps you on your toes throughout the entire picture.” The outlet recommends watching the film while it remains available on Netflix.

Psycho follows Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a Phoenix woman in love with Sam Loomis (John Gavin), a man burdened by debt who cannot marry her. Working at a real estate office, Marion witnesses a wealthy client pay $40,000 in cash for a house. Instructed by her boss to deposit the money, instead pockets it and flees toward Fairvale, California, hoping to settle Sam’s debts.

On her journey, she evades suspicion from a police officer, swaps cars, and eventually stops at the remote Bates Motel — run by the shy Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). After a conversation in the parlor about his taxidermy hobby and his strained relationship with his mother, Marion returns to her room adjacent to the office, where Norman is shown spying on her.

The report notes that much of the film’s power lies in its shifting perspective. “It begins as a movie all about Marion, then the focus shifts to Norman, then this happens a couple more times,” it observes, adding that Hitchcock “keeps reinventing the story by changing the protagonist and going in unexpected directions.” The score by Bernard Herrmann is credited with propelling the film forward from its opening titles.

“While some of the great masterworks of motion picture history are more for ‘appreciating’ than enjoying, Psycho is simply not that kind of classic,” the report concludes.
