Valve is about to enter the VR hardware game with the highly anticipated Steam Frame, and it seems they’re sweetening the deal with a familiar face: Half-Life: Alyx. But before you get your hopes up for a brand new Half-Life experience, there’s a catch – it’s the existing critically acclaimed VR title.
A Blast from the Past
Dataminer Brad Lynch has uncovered evidence suggesting that Valve plans to bundle Half-Life: Alyx with purchases of the Steam Frame. This isn’t exactly groundbreaking news, as Valve previously offered Half-Life: Alyx for free with certain hardware bundles after its initial release. However, it does raise questions about the current state of VR gaming and whether this is the best way to entice players into the ecosystem.
Lynch also pointed out that internal branches of Half-Life: Alyx have been regularly updated since early last year, although these optimizations are only now starting to appear in public updates. This implies that these changes are specifically tailored for the Steam Frame, potentially improving performance or visual fidelity on the new hardware.
The VR Landscape Today
While the Steam Frame promises to be a versatile device capable of playing both VR and non-VR games, the lack of major VR releases in recent years might make it less appealing to some. The fact that Half-Life: Alyx, a game released six years ago, is being offered as a launch title highlights this issue.
Lynch has a solid track record when it comes to VR leaks, having previously predicted the renaming of SteamVR components to “Frames” shortly before the official announcement of the Steam Frame. He also speculated about future advancements in VR technology, such as the adoption of Micro-OLED displays from Samsung.
So, while Half-Life 3 remains a distant dream for many, a free copy of one of the best VR games ever made is certainly an enticing offer. However, the fact that Alyx itself is already six years old speaks volumes about the current state of virtual reality and its evolution.
For those considering purchasing a new VR headset, the Steam Frame offers a compelling proposition with its versatility and potential for future growth. But for now, I’m holding off on rushing out to buy a fresh VR headset until we see more substantial content releases in the niche.
