Get ready to dive deep into a world brimming with bizarre characters, experimental combat, and enough side quests to make even the most dedicated completionist drool. From the minds behind the critically acclaimed Dread Delusion, comes Entropy, an upcoming RPG that’s already generating serious buzz. But what makes this game so special? It’s not just the innovative gameplay or the intriguing setting; it’s the sheer volume of content, particularly those beloved side quests.
The Side Quest Obsession
Dread Delusion was a love letter to classic first-person RPGs like The Elder Scrolls, and its standout feature was arguably its incredibly well-crafted side quests. From bizarre investigations to morally ambiguous choices, these diversions were often more compelling than the main storyline. So, when developer Lovely Hellplace announced their next project, Entropy, fans naturally wondered if they’d maintain this commitment to rich, optional content.
The answer, according to lead developer James Wragg, is a resounding “yes.” In a recent interview, Wragg revealed that he and his team are simply unable to resist the urge to create expansive, engaging side stories. “Side quests are almost my reason for doing videogames in the first place,” Wragg confessed. “A big inspiration for Dread Delusion was playing Elder Scrolls games and completely ignoring the main quest, just getting lost in all the side content.”
Wragg believes that RPGs truly come alive through their side stories, offering a space for experimentation and providing a stark contrast to the often-linear main plot. He estimates that he personally wrote “about a third” of the text that will ultimately appear in Entropy, outlining broad strokes for areas and plotlines that other writers then flesh out.
Wragg praised fellow writer Harry Tuffs for bringing the zombified Kingdom of the Endless to life, transforming a simple idea into something truly special. He also lauded Io Brindle, who spearheaded that unforgettable investigative quest in Dread Delusion, Missing Persons. However, before embarking on Entropy, Wragg initially envisioned a more concise experience.
“I started off Entropy with the idea that we were going to write way fewer words,” Wragg admitted. “I was like, ‘Dread Delusion is like the length of a novel. This took so much work.’ So for Entropy, I really wanted to cut the word count down loads. We were going to trim the fat and make it more succinct.”
However, as development progressed, the team found themselves drawn into creating detailed characters and exploring complex themes, inevitably leading to a significant increase in the game’s overall length. “As we’ve been writing it, we’ve found that we just really get into characters, and we just like fleshing stuff out with interesting themes, and that does actually take a fair amount of words,” Wragg explained.
This commitment to depth extends beyond the main characters, as Entropy features a large party size and allows players to hire anonymous mercenary characters. However, there are also story-centric party members with their own unique plotlines, all of whom are subject to permadeath.
“We love making weird and wonderful stories, and we love deep characters who we can get into chats with and find out all their beliefs and backstories and stuff,” Wragg said. “I think that one of the most interesting things about videogames is just how you can actually talk to the characters in a way that maybe you can’t in a novel or a film. Just being able to meet a strange character and ask them some stupid questions is incredibly rewarding as a player.”
Entropy is currently available in early access for a reasonable price of $12/£8.99, and includes a generous demo that allows players to experience the game’s core mechanics and world. While the final release will undoubtedly see significant expansion over this initial version, the early access launch provides a fantastic introduction to what promises to be an unforgettable RPG experience.
If Dread Delusion is any indication, prepare for a game that rewards exploration and embraces player agency. The developers are clearly passionate about crafting memorable characters and weaving intricate narratives, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.
