However, since then, silence has reigned, leaving many wondering what happened to this ambitious undertaking.
The Long Wait and the Road Ahead
Originally slated for release in September 2023, the project faced an unfortunate delay announced in August of that year, attributed to a desire to enhance the quality of the episodes. Since then, the Naruto remake has been shrouded in mystery, with animation studio Pierrot occupied with other projects like “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.” This left fans speculating whether the initial four-episode plan was deemed insufficient and potentially expanded into a full-fledged remake. Whatever the truth may be, it seems we might finally get some answers at New York Comic Con 2026.
As announced by Viz Media and Shueisha, the Naruto franchise will have a panel at NYCC on October 10th. While this news alone isn’t groundbreaking, the announcement included the intriguing detail of a “new project” being revealed. The tagline “Could this be the start of something big? Stay tuned for more!” further fuels speculation that a significant update regarding the anime remake is imminent.
The initial excitement surrounding the “Road of Naruto” trailer has gradually transformed into disappointment for many fans. The perception that the franchise wasn’t prioritized by its owners, despite its immense popularity, has been a source of frustration. Furthermore, subsequent announcements focused on smaller initiatives like video games and exhibitions, leaving fans yearning for a substantial update on the anime remake.
Hope Rekindled: NYCC 2026 and Beyond
However, the stars seem to be aligning once again. October 2027 marks the 25th anniversary of the Naruto anime, making it an opportune time for a potential announcement at NYCC, with a possible release date in 2027. Earlier this year, a TV Tokyo investors’ Q&A revealed that the broadcaster has “several projects planned” for the anniversary, signaling “the beginning of a new stage.” Given that Naruto originally aired on TV Tokyo in Japan, a significant return to the channel could be in the works.
The anime industry has undergone considerable changes since the original Naruto series aired. The traditional weekly episode model, which often placed immense pressure on producers and animators, leading to fluctuating quality and filler episodes, has largely been replaced by a seasonal approach.
