A year after its electrifying reveal at Gamescom 2025, Zhong Kui is looking sharper than ever, promising a visceral and unforgettable gaming experience. While the protagonist has changed, the core gameplay loop of intense combat and breathtaking environments remains firmly in place.

A Glimpse into the Underworld

The new trailer offers a tantalizing look at the game’s world and characters. We see the new protagonist engaging in what can only be described as FromSoftware-esque battles against bizarre and terrifying forest creatures. The gameplay is fast, fluid, and brutal, showcasing a deep combat system that rewards skill and precision. Prior to these intense encounters, we witness a touching scene where the protagonist helps an old man build a raft, followed by a daring dive into a murky lake or sinkhole to retrieve a mysterious woman. With the aid of either a companion or a powerful summoned form, he triumphs over a formidable boss, only for the woman to launch a surprise attack on him. The trailer culminates in a montage of lighthearted moments, including attempts to catch a large fish and even getting a makeover.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Game Science has included a poem within the video’s description box. While its meaning remains open to interpretation, it hints at themes of loss, memory, and the ever-present threat of the Underworld. The poem reads:

Meet Zhong Kui: The Headstrong Deity

For those unfamiliar with the game’s namesake, Zhong Kui is a fascinating figure in Taoist mythology. According to legend, “Zhong Kui was a top scholar in the Tang Dynasty imperial examinations.” However, his appearance – described as having “thick eyebrows, large eyes, and extremely ugly features” – led the emperor to reject him. In a fit of rage, Zhong Kui struck his head against palace pillars and died. Talk about a bad day at work!

Following his untimely demise, Zhong Kui was appointed an “evil-dispelling judge” by the demon-fearing emperor and later became known as the King of Hell’s “great marshal for dispelling evil and pacifying ghosts.” This explains the recurring mention of the Underworld in both the trailer and the accompanying poem.

What’s Next for Black Myth: Zhong Kui?

As of now, Black Myth: Zhong Kui remains without a confirmed release date or list of target platforms.
