First Look at Black Myth: Zhong Kui Gameplay Reveals a World More Alive Than Wukong’s

Get ready to witness the dawn of a new legend! After months of anticipation, we finally have our first extended look at gameplay from Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed Wukong. And let me tell you, this isn’t just a retread; it’s an evolution.

A World Teeming with Life

Having sunk countless hours into Wukong, one of the things that immediately stood out in this new footage is the increased focus on encounters with non-boss enemies. While Wukong certainly had its share of battles between boss fights, the world felt relatively sparse, almost entirely geared towards those epic showdowns. This time around, it seems like there’s a lot more happening within the game world itself.

The animations are absolutely breathtaking, with an incredible level of detail that brings each character to life. We see blades clashing, parries extending, and a fluidity of movement that’s reminiscent of titles like Phantom Blade Zero, another fantastic Chinese action game known for its martial arts focus.

Boss Battles Evolved

Of course, no Wukong experience is complete without those unforgettable boss battles. And in this footage, we get a taste of what’s to come. Around the midpoint of the video, we encounter a massive, moth-like humanoid creature with shell-like wings adorned with barnacles and scales. The protagonist engages in a lengthy battle, eventually summoning a warrior companion for assistance before taking direct control to unleash devastating damage.

The gameplay itself feels noticeably different compared to Wukong, and that’s entirely intentional. As Game Science has said before, they aim to “preserve the many things players loved” about Wukong while simultaneously tailoring the experience to the new protagonist.

A Work in Progress, A Legacy Continues

It’s important to remember that Zhong Kui is still a work in progress. As Game Science has stated, some of what we’re seeing is “still experimental.” This means that the final release may differ from what we’ve witnessed today.

Past Controversies and Future Hopes

Before the release of Wukong, Game Science senior staff were accused of sexism and other inappropriate remarks in an IGN report, casting a shadow over the studio. These allegations, along with Studio co-founder Féng Jì being linked to making misogynistic comments online, have understandably raised concerns within the gaming community.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui was announced almost exactly a year ago during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, with a brief teaser that simply confirmed its existence. The Chinese developer promised an update the following year, making this reveal somewhat unexpected given that Gamescom is just around the corner.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is currently in development for PC and “major consoles,” and while a release date hasn’t been announced yet, the anticipation is already building. Let’s hope that this new chapter lives up to the legacy of Wukong and addresses the concerns raised by its predecessor.
