Art Director Chris Neely explains the inspiration: “I play the game, so I don’t want to see the same shit I just played through a bunch!” The team aimed for something fresh, drawing heavily from “The Lost World” but avoiding blatant dinosaur clichés. They wanted to inject that Borderlands heart into something unexpected, like a resort, giving it a “Mad Max edge.”
FL4K Returns: A Beastmaster’s Tale
At the heart of this new adventure is FL4K, the beloved Beastmaster from Borderlands 3. The Gearbox team deemed bringing FL4K into the fold a “no-brainer,” but it required some creative redesigning to integrate them seamlessly into the environment. “I really wanted to tie FL4K into the environment and make them feel like they are part of that,” Neely explained. This resulted in a stunning visual transformation, with FL4K sporting an iridescent sniper rifle adorned with jungle foliage, a cape, and even a skull – all while maintaining their iconic “FL4K-ness.”
Upon arriving on Providence, your Vault Hunter is tasked with helping FL4K. However, they quickly discover that something terrible has happened: Mr. Chew, FL4K’s faithful canine companion, has been kidnapped by soldiers from Tediore, an underutilized weapons manufacturer in the Borderlands universe finally getting its moment to shine. This sets off a chain of events reminiscent of a certain action-packed revenge story…
John Wick Meets Loot-a-Rama
The kidnapping of Mr. Chew is no accident; it’s a deliberate act by Lieutenant Harmony and her Tediore forces, setting the stage for a thrilling quest filled with intense firefights and unforgettable moments. “That was another one of the inspirations! A little John Wick action!” Neely revealed. This blend of intimate character-driven narratives within a larger world is what makes Borderlands so captivating.
Of course, no Borderlands experience would be complete without its signature loot-a-rama. “FL4K and the Last Resort” delivers with 18 new Legendary weapons, tons of cosmetics, and over 20 challenging bosses to conquer. New enemies like the Deadframes, which utilize Tediore technology, add another layer of tactical depth. And for those seeking even more action, Digiverse Events offer a unique way to earn valuable loot by clearing arenas within Tediore’s digital pocket dimension.
