Capcom’s ambitious remake of the beloved Resident Evil 4 was a bold undertaking, modernizing a classic while retaining its core essence. While the game successfully revamped several sequences and even introduced features like Ashley’s more engaging playable sections and the satisfying chainsaw parry, it seems some content ended up on the cutting room floor.
A Glimpse into What Could Have Been
Data miners recently uncovered evidence of a scrapped prologue chapter, tentatively dubbed “Chapter 0.” This sequence would have followed Ashley as she desperately fled from her pursuers on the night before Leon’s arrival in the village. While Capcom never fully realized this segment, a dedicated modder has painstakingly pieced together the available assets to create a playable version, now available on NexusMods.
Exploring “Chapter 0”: Ashley’s Night of Terror
In the mod, players take control of Ashley as she navigates the eerily quiet village at night, using her phone as a makeshift flashlight. She witnesses the cultists brutally murder an outsider and then observes Luis being captured – events that provide crucial context for the main game narrative. The modder’s detailed breakdown reveals that most of the animations, camera angles, and unique features, such as Ashley’s phone flashlight, were salvaged directly from the game’s files. Everything else was cleverly reconstructed using existing assets.

The “Chapter 0” mod seamlessly integrates with the main game, playing after the opening cutscene and before Chapter 1. This allows players to experience a more complete picture of the events leading up to Leon’s arrival and Ashley’s abduction. While we can only speculate on why Capcom ultimately decided to omit this prologue from the final release, it’s possible they felt it over-explained elements that are better implied or alluded to throughout the game. After all, both Luis and Ashley are destined to be captured, regardless.
A Rare Glimpse Behind the Curtain
The omission of “Chapter 0” arguably detracts from the slow-burn tension of the game’s opening minutes, as Leon encounters the Ganados for the first time. However, even if its removal made sense from a narrative perspective, the mod is a fascinating glimpse into what could have been. In an industry often shrouded in secrecy and with fundamental differences between how games and movies are developed, it’s rare to gain this kind of insight into deleted content.
