The Kingdom Hearts saga is renowned for its sprawling narrative and intricate connections. Now, series creator Tetsuya Nomura has revealed just how complex things have become: Square Enix actually employs a dedicated “loremaster” to ensure that both the development team and Disney are on the same page regarding the ever-expanding lore!
A Universe of Hearts: Navigating the Kingdom Hearts Saga
With the official release date for Kingdom Hearts IV set for late 2027, anticipation is at fever pitch. Fans are revisiting previous installments, leading to a surge in popularity and making collections of Kingdom Hearts titles some of the highest-selling games on Steam following the recent extended gameplay trailer shown at D23 in July.
In total, there are {{LINK_3: 13 games}} within the Kingdom Hearts franchise, released across a wide array of platforms over the years. Keeping track of all the characters, plot points, and interconnected narratives is a monumental task, even for seasoned players!
Disney Needs Help Too: Enter the Kingdom Hearts Loremaster
This isn’t just a challenge for players; even the developers struggle to keep everything straight! During an August 2026 interview with Famitsu, series creator Tetsuya Nomura confessed that the storyline has become so convoluted that Square Enix hired a loremaster specifically to maintain coherence and explain the plot to Disney.
“As the Kingdom Hearts series continues, the number of characters inevitably increases, and the story becomes more complex,” Nomura explained. “For example, with the newly announced anime series, the number of external people involved in the Kingdom Hearts series has increased, making it difficult to explain the settings and scenarios each time.”
Fortunately, a staff member from the ‘χ series’ possessed the organizational skills needed. This individual meticulously compiled and organized the lore of previous Kingdom Hearts games into an easily understandable format. They also handle explaining the scenarios and settings to Disney. In fact, at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts IV’s development, Disney requested this compilation, leading to the loremaster officially joining the Kingdom Hearts IV team as a proofreader.
This “proofreader,” as Nomura calls him, is responsible for communicating the overarching story to Disney. He’s a popular figure within the team due to his thoroughness, breaking down complex story beats, characters, and lore using visual diagrams.
“He explains things to Disney as clearly as possible, using diagrams and such,” Nomura continued. “His role internally is to proofread the script, checking for inconsistencies between the current script and past settings. He was especially well-suited for this project because of his deep involvement with the χ series.”
Nomura clarified that while he’s not involved in writing the actual story, his role is crucial for maintaining consistency. This also revealed a strong connection between Kingdom Hearts IV and the χ titles, a series of prequel games set during the Age of Fairy Tales. While these games were primarily available on web browsers and mobile devices, Nomura assured fans that “even if you haven’t played the smartphone version, don’t worry, their personalities are depicted within [Kingdom Hearts IV].”
The fact that even Disney itself requires a loremaster to navigate the Kingdom Hearts saga is a testament to its intricate and often overwhelming plot. It’s so complex that we at IGN felt compelled to create a video explaining the lore in just five minutes!
