Rockstar Games is turning up the heat on GTA 6, teasing a deeper level of character customization and a more reactive open world. Ahead of today’s highly anticipated extended preview on Netflix, the developer has unveiled details about how players will need to manage their characters’ physical well-being and how choices will have significant consequences in the vibrant landscape of Vice City.

Staying Fit in Vice City

In a new interview, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson revealed that Jason and Lucia, the game’s protagonists, require more than just babysitting. Players will need to actively manage their characters’ health through exercise, diet, and rest. This mechanic, reminiscent of elements found in GTA: San Andreas, adds a layer of realism and player agency not seen before.

Working out will visibly build muscle for both Jason and Lucia, while indulging in unhealthy food choices will lead to noticeable weight gain. Rockstar emphasizes that this system is designed to allow for “self-expression” without compromising the core essence of the characters. Jason’s backstory as an ex-military drug runner contrasts with Lucia’s recent stint in prison, adding depth to their individual narratives.

Furthermore, players must ensure that Jason and Lucia get adequate rest between missions. Prolonged periods of sleep deprivation or constant evasion from law enforcement will negatively impact their performance. The game offers the option to play as either character or go solo, with seamless switching designed for maximum flexibility. “The thing we love about this medium is the way these characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with,” Nelson told Dazed (via Shinobi602). “Their story becomes a journey you share with them.”

Vanity and Vice City

In the world of GTA 6, appearances matter. Nelson highlights that Vice City is built around vanity, and how Jason and Lucia present themselves will “carry significant weight” when interacting with social media stars, celebrities, and tourists.

Consequences in a Reactive World

Rockstar is also aiming to create a more reactive world where player actions have meaningful consequences. The developer promises that these repercussions will be “much deeper” than those found in previous GTA games.

NPCs: More Diverse Than Ever

The leaked gameplay footage has showcased an impressively populated city, and Nelson confirms that Rockstar has invested heavily in creating diverse crowds of NPCs. The studio conducted extensive research in Miami and its surrounding areas, meeting with individuals from all walks of life, including club promoters, infamous figures, law enforcement officers, ex-criminals, and even gun dealers. This deep dive into the local culture ensures a wide range of unique NPC interactions.

Rockstar developed new tools to “build the most detailed and varied character population” for GTA 6. The company’s Los Angeles office was solely dedicated to working on NPCs. Over 50 real street artists were brought in to create murals for the game, adding another layer of authenticity to the world.

When it came to vehicle handling, real race-car drivers were hired to fine-tune how cars behave in Vice City, ensuring a realistic and engaging driving experience.

Following several days of leaks, the first new look at GTA 6 will debut exclusively on Netflix later today, followed by a wider release on platforms like YouTube. Rockstar addressed the leaks this week , describing them as “heartbreaking” for the team ahead of the game’s November launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
