I see him in my dreams. Sonic the Hedgehog, stretched to horrifying proportions, like a Sega-flavored Slenderman. Then I wake up and realize my nightmares have been made manifest in the waking world. To be clear, I’m beyond incredulously yelling about whichever new IP Fortnite has managed to bastardize this time. Go on and be great with your crossovers. But this latest collaboration that puts Sonic, Shadow, and Dr. Eggman in the game just looks frightening.
A Visually Unsettling Crossover
It’s the kind of subtle, sinister bad where something’s off just enough to be unsettling. The face seems wrong, like I’m looking at someone’s closest approximation of a half-remembered picture of Sonic. Those Super Sonic quills are so wonky. And, worst of all, why is he so gatdayum long? It was wrong when they did it in the Sonic Boom cartoon and it’s wrong now! I understand that for technical reasons, Fortnite characters have to be within a certain range of heights and widths to maintain hitbox consistency. I also realize that Fortnite’s run of humanoid character crossovers might be running stale, requiring some bolder, furrier choices.
But instead of trying to work with Sonic and Shadow in their canon-compliant proportions and maybe do something interesting with character design, Fortnite stretched them on the rack and now we’re dealing with the gamer’s version of the 1.0 Movie Sonic debacle. Get this: Sonic Boom lookin’ ahh Lanky Kong lookin’ ahh Great Value lookin’ ahh Human in a cheap plastic blow-up suit lookin’ ahh Got put through a pasta extruder lookin’ ahh Sonic out of my face.
