Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, working alongside studio Red, according to a report. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce on the project. His previous credits include several Transformers films, two GI Joe movies, and the 2005 Doom adaptation that starred Dwayne Johnson.
CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the report on X (formerly Twitter), noting there was no additional detail available at this point.
“There’s really no more detail at this point, so instead of talking about that I’m going to take a hard swerve and remind everyone that the perfect cyberpunk movie already exists, and it even stars Johnny Silverhand himself, Keanu Reeves—as another guy named Johnny who’s having a rough time in the cyber-future, believe it or not.”

The film he referenced is Johnny Mnemonic. Based on a William Gibson short story of the same name, the 1995 release is set in the year 2021. Reeves plays a “mnemonic courier” who transports sensitive information stored in his head—capable of carrying nearly 80 gigs of data—through an internet he describes as insecure and full of scammers, hackers, and other criminal elements.

The plot follows Johnny taking on a high-risk mission that quickly goes wrong. He is hunted by the yakuza, betrayed by his handler, rescued by a cyborg, defeated by a preacher, saved by a dolphin, and ultimately destroys capitalism—though the writer’s loose summary of events acknowledges details are fuzzy after time has passed.
The article notes its author paid to see Johnny Mnemonic in theaters, citing Reeves’ popularity following Speed and a cast that included Dolph Lundgren, Ice-T, Dina Meyer, Udo Kier, Henry Rollins, Von Flores, Don Francks, and Takeshi Kitano. The film was not particularly well received but reportedly made money.
No date has been announced for the Cyberpunk 2077 movie. Johnny Mnemonic is available to stream on Netflix, Prime, Apple, Tubi, and other platforms.
