Amanita Design has announced Machinarium 2, a long-awaited sequel to its acclaimed 2009 puzzle adventure game. The original title was described by John Walker as “a sort of beauty that games are almost never graced with”.
The new game once again features two robots, Josef and Berta, who make their way through a world “inspired by old master drawings and Renaissance landscape painting”, according to the studio’s press release. This time around, players can switch between the two characters, using their different abilities to solve puzzles.
As with the original, Machinarium 2 contains no text, with robots communicating through speech bubble icons, symbols and gestures.

“After escaping the city of Machinarium, Josef and Berta crash-land in the barrens. Climbing down a cliff, they find a hidden valley home to two peculiar robot tribes: one living in the Elektrona monastery high on the rocks, the other in the city of Oilton below. Both are slowly running out of power.”

The studio has brought back Tomáš Dvořák, the composer behind the original Machinarium soundtrack. Full gamepad support is available from launch, though players can still rely on traditional point-and-click controls.
The sequel arrives 17 years after the first game. Amanita CEO and game designer Jakub Dvorský explained the studio’s reasoning: “We’re not getting any younger, and the world seems to be ending, so if we were ever going to make Machinarium 2, now is the right time. We’re also grateful to every player who waited patiently all these years. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
No release date has been announced for Machinarium 2, though a trailer has been revealed.
