As Halloween approaches and the global economy leaves many people feeling financially drained, one data analyst has drawn a tongue-in-cheek but meticulously researched conclusion: vampire games are flooding Steam in numbers that track uncomfortably well with mounting economic dread. Working through 1,213 titles tagged “Vampires” on Valve’s platform and cross-referencing their release dates and first appearances in the SteamDB archive, the analyst—known as Datawalker—found a steep, multi-year climb in vampire-themed releases that mirrors declining household finances across the United States.

The piece, published during Halloween season, began as an observation. Following Arkane’s troubled 2023 release Redfall, the writer noticed a growing roster of bloodsucking titles—including Vampire Survivors, V Rising, Nighthawks, Moonlight Peaks, and Blood of Dawnwalker—prompting the hypothesis that developers are leaning harder into Dracula-inspired fare precisely as living conditions grow more precarious. What started as an anecdotal hunch quickly hardened into what the analyst wryly calls “a recession indicator,” backed by spreadsheets.

A Messy Genre, Meticulously Parsed

Assessing whether Steam’s vampire offerings could serve as an economic bellwether sounds straightforward at first—the platform carries a “Vampires” tag and lists release dates openly. In practice, the writer found it anything but. The tag is riddled with inconsistency: developers and users alike apply it to virtually anything featuring even a single Dracula-like figure, and the breakout success of Vampire Survivors dragged countless bullet-heaven imitators into the category before Steam introduced its own genre label.

To build a more complete picture than release dates alone could offer, Datawalker turned to SteamDB, which records when a title first appeared in Valve’s store data. Because Steam itself offers no public API for that information, the analyst manually sorted through all 1,213 games carrying the Vampires tag at time of writing, recording both their launch dates and their earliest SteamDB entries after deciding whether each was genuinely a vampire game.

“A vampire game is a game whose developer sat down with an obvious interest in making a game about vampire stuff: a game where you are a vampire, are concerned with vampires, or are generally surrounded by notions of vampirism. A game where there just happens to be a couple vampires somewhere? Not a vampire game.”

The writer acknowledges the subjectivity in that methodology—admitting, for instance, that Resident Evil Village slipped through the cracks despite its memorable vampire antagonist—and concedes the figures likely represent a conservative estimate. If anything, notable titles were excluded rather than included.

The Numbers Tell a Story

The results are striking. In 2016, just four vampire games launched on Steam; by mid-2026, that figure had reached 65, with more slated for release before year’s end. The acceleration is sharpest over the last six years: in 2020, at most six vampire games debuted in a single quarter, versus 24 in 2026. Listings are climbing too—nine vampire projects first appeared in SteamDB’s archive in 2016, compared with 99 last year.

The analyst notes that total Steam releases ballooned from 9,634 in 2020 to 21,263 in 2025 over the same window, yet it is not merely raw volume driving the trend. The percentage of vampire games among all launches has risen steadily—doubling or more in some recent quarters compared with the start of the decade—even though fewer than one in a hundred Steam releases qualifies as a genuine vampire title. One notable dip occurred in mid-2025.

To capture how vampires are occupying overall platform “mindshare,” Datawalker devised what it dubs the Vampire Menace Rating™, dividing quarterly vampire appearances on SteamDB against total Steam launches. While that particular metric proved rougher to interpret—prompting a comparison to Dracula’s Castle from Castlevania—the underlying growth in both count and share of vampire games is, by the analyst’s own account, “very real.”

The Economic Backdrop

If the genre’s rise can genuinely signal a recession, why does it coincide with headlines about record stock markets and expanding GDP? The writer argues those macroeconomic victories benefit a narrow slice of the population—those profiting from booming sectors like artificial intelligence—while ordinary Americans struggle. Median household income rose roughly 4.6% between 2020 and 2025 after adjusting for inflation, while the Consumer Price Index for all
