Almost a year after Peacemaker season 2 concluded with one of its most jaw-dropping cliffhangers yet, John Cena has offered fans his clearest update yet on whether the character will return. In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz for the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, the actor who plays Chris Smith addressed speculation about a third season and explained why showrunner James Gunn must prioritize other projects within the newly restructured DC Universe.
The timing of Cena’s comments is notable, given that fans have been left hanging since the season 2 finale. That episode ended with Rick Flag Sr. kidnapping Chris and dropping him onto an alien prison planet designated for metahumans like him, a bleak setup that seemed to signal an uncertain future for the character. Now, nearly twelve months later, Cena is finally weighing in on what comes next.
The Helmet Question That Started It All
The conversation began with Horowitz asking whether Cena had worn Peacemaker’s unmistakable toilet-shaped steel helmet since the season 2 finale wrapped. His answer revealed both his commitment to the role and a candid look at how Gunn views the character going forward.

“No,” Cena told Horowitz. “And when I put that helmet on, I told James, ‘Dude, I will put this helmet on as long as you need me to.’ I love working with him.”

Cena’s willingness to don the peculiar headgear underscores his ongoing relationship with Gunn, who serves as both showrunner and DC Studios co-CEO. That dual role has significantly altered how Peacemaker might exist in the future. While Gunn had been pretty cryptic about plans for the franchise, Cena’s latest remarks build on earlier confirmation that the character could appear elsewhere beyond traditional television.
Gunn Confirms Peacemaker Will Return — Just Not Necessarily as a Show
The uncertainty surrounding Peacemaker stems from Gunn himself. Shortly after the season 2 finale aired, Gunn confirmed shortly after that the may have been “the final episode of Peacemaker.” Speaking on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, he clarified his vision while leaving room for hope.
“We have plans, but you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long,” Gunn said. “I’m a true believer in this show and these characters. Peacemaker will be back.”
James Gunn
The distinction matters: Gunn envisions Peacemaker surviving within the broader DCU framework rather than necessarily continuing as a standalone television series. This approach makes sense given that the character now belongs to a larger cinematic universe where Gunn holds considerable creative authority.
A Box of Toys to Prioritize
“Because you get the whole box of toys, you have to address the really valuable ones first, and I understand that,” Cena explained. “[…] I got to step back. Let Superman and Batman get their due.”

The reference to Superman and Batman highlights where Gunn’s immediate focus lies. The DCU reboot launched with a hugely successful Superman film, though the subsequent Supergirl project proved a critical disappointment and dealt a solid blow to Gunn’s grip on the franchise. That mixed reception has prompted debate among observers about whether he remains the right person to lead the universe.
Loading Ahead
Gunn faces mounting pressure as he steers the DCU forward. With ahead of him, his next blockbuster will be crucial to restoring confidence in the franchise’s direction. Until that film lands and proves successful, a Peacemaker season 3 remains unlikely to move forward.
