The Coalition’s studio head Mike Crump has defended the decision to keep Gears of War: E-Day an Xbox exclusive, following the game’s launch this week after it was pulled from a PlayStation 5 release earlier this year. In a recent interview with the BBC, Crump argued that keeping the franchise on Microsoft’s platform is both a natural and deliberate choice for a series he says has been tied to Xbox for two decades.

The move comes amid an ongoing restructuring campaign at Microsoft, which has left The Coalition facing uncertainty over potential layoffs. With E-Day now available exclusively on Xbox consoles rather than across multiple platforms, the studio acknowledges it will likely see lower sales figures than a wider release might have generated — but Crump insists that is not how the team measures success.

A Brand Entwined with Xbox

Gears of War: E-Day launched this week to strong critical reception, though its availability is limited to Xbox hardware. The decision to withdraw the game from a PS5 launch slate earlier this year was made by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, and Crump now says keeping it exclusive was never in doubt.

“Gears has been an exclusive franchise to Xbox for 20 years now,” said Crump. “It’s sort of entwined deeply with the brand.” He added that the series is meant, at least in part, to carry the banner for the Xbox platform and give players a reason to be within its ecosystem.

“We measure things like, are we showcasing the platform? Are we pushing the hardware to its limits? Are we showcasing what the Xbox is capable of? Our goal basically is to be the best-looking game on the Xbox and really show the industry what’s possible with our hardware.”

The framing that Gears remains an Xbox-exclusive franchise warrants some nuance. Last year, Gears of War: Reloaded launched on PS5, meaning the series as a whole is no longer strictly confined to Microsoft’s hardware. And while it is widely assumed that E-Day would have seen higher sales had it arrived on PlayStation, Crump said the studio is deliberately taking a broader view than raw figures.

A Technical Showcase in Its Own Right

If anything, Gears of War: E-Day has succeeded as a demonstration of what Xbox consoles can achieve. The game looks striking on both the Xbox Series X and Series S, so much so that The Coalition had to rely on trickery with the Page File to get it running smoothly on the less-powerful console.

The gameplay itself has been equally well received. Our reviewer Ryan McCaffrey gave E-Day a 9 out of 10, praising its return to form and its handling of beloved characters.

“By going back to the beginning, Gears of War: E-Day returns to the heart of this series: Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, and a Locust horde that’s as terrifying as it is dangerous. E-Day pulls off the tightrope act of giving us a heartfelt prequel with strong characters even when we know how it ends.”

The reviewer noted that the game evolves the enemies, weapons, and combat players expect from the series, delivering a campaign that stands “toe-to-toe with any of the others.” It also sets up roughly ten years of story before Marcus Fenix is tossed into prison ahead of the events of the first Gears of War.

Looking Ahead

Even as a critical and technical hit, sales numbers will inevitably play a role in E-Day’s long-term success — particularly while Microsoft continues its months-long restructuring. Shortly after launch, developers at The Coalition told Eurogamer they were expecting layoffs, prompting Crump to address those concerns directly.

“For us that’s about shipping a great game that people are going to love and I feel like, as a team, we’ve done that,” he said.

Whether a beautiful presentation and glowing reviews will be enough to shield the studio from further cuts remains to be seen. For now, The Coalition has delivered what it set out to do: a visually stunning prequel that aims to showcase the full potential of Xbox hardware — even if doing so means forgoing a wider audience.
