Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition’s long-awaited prequel that reopens the horror of Emergence Day on the war-torn planet Sera, has arrived on Xbox Game Pass with an opening hour critics are calling near-perfect. Released this week into a subscription catalog crowded with similar shooters and other entries in its own franchise, the game reportedly opens not with the series’ trademark chainsaw-gun carnage but with a slow-burning horror experience engineered specifically to hook players who might otherwise scroll right past it.
The distinction matters more than usual for a first-party Xbox release. Name recognition and word-of-mouth drive success on Game Pass, where any new title must carve out an edge over its peers in the catalog. E-Day already carries both through its heritage, but reviewers have zeroed in on one subtle aspect that makes it an especially strong fit for the service: a near-perfect opening hour.
A horror-infused Act 1
As a prequel to the original Gears of War trilogy, E-Day charts the Locust’s initial assault on Sera. Yet rather than diving straight into the brutal, bloody shootouts the franchise is known for, The Coalition takes its cues from the horror genre and eases players gently into this violent universe. Act 1 has proven difficult to put down, delivering exactly the kind of commanding opening that a flagship first-party release needs to keep subscribers engaged.

Rather than introducing longtime protagonists Marcus Fenix or Dom Santiago immediately, the game opens with a worker investigating a disturbance underground, only to be killed by the Locust hours before emergence. The stakes for the series’ iconic duo are then established, revealing that Dom’s days within the Coalition of Government (COG) would have been numbered had Emergence Day not occurred.
The first impression is everything for a game, especially when it’s primarily being distributed on a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass. The team at The Coalition clearly understood this, and designed the first hour to be the strongest part of the game, easing players into this universe in a way that made me not want to put the controller down.
