Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson has provided his first official update on the highly anticipated <Stormlight Archive television series being developed by Apple TV, confirming that casting a showrunner is now underway and that he has personally “interviewed a bunch” of candidates for the role.
The announcement comes during an interview with Collider, arriving just months after Apple TV officially confirmed it was developing the adaptation earlier this year. While the series remains some distance from production, Sanderson’s remarks offer fans their clearest look yet at how the sprawling Cosmere epic is being brought to screen.
Finding the Right Showrunner
According to Sanderson, the search for a showrunner has already begun in earnest. The prolific novelist says he is looking for “high-caliber” talent to lead the project, and while he will handle the writing duties himself, he acknowledges that he will likely need a creative partner on board.
Beyond his responsibilities as writer, Sanderson will also serve as a producer on the series. His involvement runs deeper than most author-adaptations, thanks to an unprecedented deal with Apple TV granting him rights to his expansive Cosmere universe. That arrangement reportedly gives him final approval over key creative decisions, ensuring the adaptation stays faithful to the source material.
“When you read a fantasy, one of the key ideas is that while you’re between those pages, you’re able to believe that this is a real story. This is a real place. This actually could happen, and some really simple things can kick you out in the television show.”
Brandon Sanderson
Sanderson’s vision for the adaptation emphasizes realism over spectacle. He wants the fantasy world to feel less like a renaissance fair and more like an authentic, lived-in place—one where viewers can suspend their disbelief and invest in the story as though it could genuinely unfold.
A Big-Budget Production Ahead
Achieving that grounded sense of reality will demand significant financial investment. Sanderson’s comments underscore that this is shaping up to be a major production, echoing the record-breaking budgets seen on other fantasy adaptations. Amazon Prime Video’s The Rings of Power shattered records as the most expensive television series ever made, setting a high bar for what studios are willing to spend on genre content.

The appetite for quality fantasy on television appears stronger than ever. If HBO’s multiple <prequels are any indication, audiences remain hungry for ambitious world-building and rich storytelling—precisely the kind of material that Sanderson’s Cosmere is built upon.
Mistborn Film and Other Projects
Sanderson also touched on Apple TV’s other adaptation in development: a film version of the original Mistborn trilogy, beginning with 2006’s
In August, the author revealed that he had completed the first draft of the screenplay but cautioned that many more drafts remain ahead. Fans can expect further developments as the project continues to take shape.
Beyond his television and film commitments, Sanderson will soon return to the Mistborn novels themselves.
Looking Ahead
The Stormlight Archive series remains far from a confirmed release date, with Sanderson still navigating the process of assembling his creative team. However, the momentum behind Apple TV’s expanding Sanderson slate suggests that more announcements are on the horizon.
In addition to the Cosmere adaptations, Sanderson’s Skyward book series is also set to be adapted for television by the same team responsible for Netflix’s live-action
