Telltale Games has announced that The Wolf Among Us Remastered will launch worldwide on October 29, bringing the studio’s acclaimed noir detective adventure back to modern platforms with fully rebuilt visuals and new atmospheric modes. To prepare for Bigby Wolf’s enhanced return to Fabletown, we sat down with Matt Saia, game director of The Wolf Among Us Remastered and VP of Creative at Telltale, to discuss how the team honored the original while pushing it forward.

The Wolf Among Us first captivated players as one of Telltale’s most beloved titles, following the Big Bad Wolf-inspired bounty hunter Bigby Wolf through a gritty version of New York City where fairy tale characters live in hiding. Now nearly a decade after its original release, the story has been remastered from the ground up, with every character model and texture rebuilt to deliver an experience that longtime fans will recognize while looking unmistakably more refined.

A Respectful Return to Fabletown

Saia described the project as a labor of love rather than a simple visual refresh. The team deliberately avoided altering the story, directorial choices, or overall art style, which he called “sacred” to the game’s identity. Instead, the focus landed on introducing new players to Fabletown in the best way possible while giving returning fans an upgraded version of a classic.

We wanted to honor the Telltale legacy. This is a classic title, and it needed a respectful update. We avoided touching the story, the directorial choices, and the overall art style, those are sacred to us. The goal is to introduce new players to Wolf in the best way possible and create a fun experience for returning players by packing it with updated art and behind the scenes features. Ultimately, it was a love letter to fans.

The Birth of Noir Mode

One of the most anticipated additions is Noir Mode, which transforms Fabletown into a stark black-and-white world evoking classic film noir. Saia noted that he was personally responsible for adding Shadows Mode to Telltale’s Batman series, but this new mode takes a different approach.

Unlike the colorful highlights used in Batman, The Wolf Among Us Remastered commits fully to a pure noir aesthetic. According to Saia, the black-and-white treatment makes the shadows feel darker and shifts the overall tone of the game, offering players an entirely different mood to experience the story through.

Rebuilding from Scratch

The technical overhaul was far more involved than a straightforward resolution bump. The team migrated the quirky original engine up to the latest one used in Telltale’s Batman series, then created new shaders for details like shiny bottles and inverted lines on moving objects such as the ghost ship.

Saia said lighting proved to be the biggest challenge of the entire process. Because any change to a scene required relighting it from scratch, every single scene in the game was ultimately relit. The effort paid off so completely that the team built the entire Summer Games Fest trailer entirely within the engine.

A Werewolf Worth Remembering

The remastered characters underwent a complete journey from concept to high-end model to final in-game asset, with textures and models described as multiple times more detailed than the original. Saia emphasized that the team walked a careful balance beam, ensuring Bigby still looked like the Bigby players remembered while being unmistakably sharper.

The werewolf itself received perhaps the most dramatic transformation. Saia admitted that everyone expected changes to the creature and confirmed it became far more ferocious and powerful than before, though never straying from what makes The Wolf Among Us distinctive.

Looking Ahead

Saia closed by reflecting on the joy of revisiting Fabletown with a team he praised as incredible. He said the goal is to reassure existing fans that they are in good hands while inviting new players to be captivated by a fully realized version of the universe.

“To me, that’s what makes a great remaster; when you know people poured their soul into it,” Saia said, thanking supporters for sticking with Telltale. The Wolf Among Us Remastered arrives October 29, giving both old and new players a chance to step back into the neon-lit streets of Fabletown.
