Nintendo has unveiled a wave of new features for its highly anticipated remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, confirming that the title will support physical ocarina instruments and introducing an expanded companion app brimming with gameplay options. Announced during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, these additions expand the classic Nintendo 64 adventure well beyond its original scope, blending nostalgic musical mechanics with modern quality-of-life conveniences.

The most striking revelation is that players can now play real ocarinas directly within the game. Series producer Eiji Aonuma demonstrated the feature in action by playing “Epona’s Song,” a melody honoring Link’s trusty horse, using an actual wind instrument connected to the Nintendo Switch 2. While traditional controller buttons will continue to allow note input for those who prefer conventional controls, Nintendo also revealed that players can hum melodies directly into the Switch 2 controllers’ built-in microphone to achieve the same musical effect.

A Companion App with Eleven Distinct Features

Beyond the musical innovations, the remake introduces a significantly expanded version of Zelda Notes through the Nintendo Switch app. Previously used for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom in 2025, this iteration will offer eleven different options, though only several have been detailed so far. The feature provides players with a fresh excuse to download the application and engage more deeply with Hyrule.

Nintendo has spent years refining how players interact with its worlds, and these additions demonstrate a genuine commitment to honoring Ocarina of Time while making it accessible to new generations of adventurers.

Among the highlighted options is Today’s Record, which tracks player accomplishments in chronological order complete with screenshots capturing moments when milestones were achieved. Functioning as a Zelda-specific achievement system, it also delivers detailed statistics including daily playtime, enemies defeated, time spent in specific areas, items used, deaths endured, hearts lost, rupees earned, distance traveled, and even the amount of grass cut.

Gossip Quests Reward Exploration

The Gossip Quests segment challenges players to locate a wide variety of photographed locations scattered throughout Hyrule. Upon finding each area, players earn points that can be exchanged for ocarina scores playable in-game. Prompts range from highly visible landmarks to obscure details such as specific rock formations, rewarding thorough exploration and appreciation of the remake’s intricate design.

The difficulty remains variable, with a hint button available to guide players toward harder-to-find locations. This approach encourages players to notice the countless small details Nintendo has woven into the remade world while maintaining accessibility for those who may struggle with certain areas.

Digital Ocarinas and Community Sharing

The Play Ocarina section offers a digital version of the azure instrument, allowing players to experiment freely. Guided playback is available either in full or at the beginning of any score, teaching exactly which notes to play and for how long to produce specific sounds.

A particularly engaging aspect enables players to record their own compositions and share them with others via QR codes, promising a wave of community-created melodies. Meanwhile, Ocarina of Time Quiz presents trivia questions that must be answered within ten seconds, each featuring four possible answers and an accompanying image. With 2,000 total questions available for one daily attempt—extendable through spending twenty Rupees—the quiz rewards consecutive correct answers with rising “Egg Level” and “Cucco Level” rankings.

Several options remained unexplained during the Direct session, including Map, Hall of Fallen Foes, Global Play Data, Photo Studio, Threads of Time, and amiibo support. While some are self-explanatory, others await further disclosure as Nintendo continues to reveal details about the remake.

Looking Ahead

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on November 5. As anticipation builds, these newly announced features underscore Nintendo’s dedication to delivering a definitive version of one of gaming’s most beloved titles, marrying the series’ rich musical heritage with innovative modern interactions.
