Prime Video has officially confirmed that a sixth season of Reacher is in the works, cementing the Alan Ritchson-led action series’ status as one of streaming’s most powerful franchises. The announcement arrived just days after season four aired its finale and while production on season five was already underway, with Amazon MGM Studios citing staggering viewership numbers to justify the greenlight.

The streamer revealed that season four reached 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days on Prime Video, placing it among the top-five most-viewed seasons of any original series in the service’s history. With more than 200 million viewers worldwide to date, Amazon describes Reacher as “among Prime Video’s most-watched original series,” a designation that made the season six renewal almost inevitable.

A Massive International Audience

What makes Reacher’s success particularly notable is its global reach. According to Prime Video, more than half of the show’s audience is based internationally, with strong viewership reported in the U.K., Germany, and Brazil. The series, which debuted on Prime Video in 2022, has cultivated a devoted worldwide fanbase that extends well beyond its American origins.

“Reacher hits hard. What Lee Child has built and Nick Santora and his creative teams have brought to life is, simply, incredible. Alan Ritchson is Jack Reacher — he’s delivered a performance that has captivated audiences around the world. Together with our partners at Paramount Television Studios, we couldn’t be more excited to continue this journey. Reacher is a truly iconic series, and we’re thrilled to be on the ride with this extraordinary cast and crew for Season Six.”

Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios

The creative team behind the adaptation has been instrumental in its success. Adapted from Lee Child’s novels by Nick Santora, Reacher has maintained a gritty, uncompromising tone that has resonated with audiences. The partnership between Amazon MGM Studios and Paramount Television Studios continues to drive the franchise forward as it looks toward season six.

Source Material and Future Adaptations

The recently aired fourth season of Reacher was based on Lee Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow, the 13th book in the series. Season five will adapt Make Me, the 20th installment. Prime Video did not specify which book will serve as the basis for season six, though previous seasons have adapted Killing Floor, Bad Luck and Trouble, and Persuader into television.

According to Ritchson, one of Child’s Reacher novels sounds like it’s off the table: 1998’s Die Trying, the second Jack Reacher book. Responding to a fan on Threads, Ritchson said that Die Trying is his favorite Reacher book and “I had it approved until someone got re-elected” — ostensibly referring to U.S. President Donald Trump. The novel sees the series’ hero kidnapped by members of a separatist white supremacist militia in Montana.

There’s no shortage of material to draw from, though. The Jack Reacher series includes 30 books and a short story collection, with more to come. Lee and Andrew Child — the author’s younger brother — are releasing a new novel in the series this fall titled Chain Reaction.

Looking Ahead

Slow down: there is no confirmed release date for Reacher season five yet. The fifth season is currently in production in Toronto and expected to wrap filming later this year, which would mean a mid- to late-2027 release date. Given the pace at which Amazon MGM Studios turns around new seasons of Reacher — about 15 to 18 months — we shouldn’t expect season six to arrive until late 2028 or early 2029.

The latter would potentially mean a new administration, so maybe Ritchson will get his Die Trying adaptation eventually. In the meantime, the actor may also take on another adaptation, starring in a film based on Helldivers.

Season five of Reacher has been described by series creator Lee Child as a “brutal” and “disgusting story.” Child recently told Collider, “It’s not fit for family consumption, so I don’t know what they’re going to do about the actual crime in that.” Season four remains available on Prime Video alongside the eight-episode spinoff series Neagley.
