Bandai Namco unveiled its ambitious new take on the Gundam franchise at Tokyo Game Show this week, presenting Gundam Rogue Orbit as a high-mobility action game designed to welcome newcomers without demanding familiarity with five decades of franchise lore. After spending time with a playable build of the title, it became evident that the studio has crafted something surprisingly accessible: an engaging mech-action experience that deliberately avoids the punishing difficulty associated with Soulslike titles and even feels less immediately challenging than 2023’s Armored Core 6.

The initial reveal of Gundam Rogue Orbit drew immediate comparisons to action-focused series such as Armored Core, Monster Hunter, and Devil May Cry. Those comparisons proved apt in important ways, though the game leans much more heavily into melee combat. Flashy sword, lance, and “whip sword” attacks land with the panache one would expect from a Devil May Cry title, favoring style and fluidity over punishing precision.

A Friendly Entry Point Into Mech Combat

In short, Gundam Rogue Orbit feels fun, flashy, and occasionally a little button-mashy. The combat is not punishing, nor does it overly restrict movement or attacks. While your Gundam can temporarily overheat by boosting or shooting too rapidly, the demo rarely left players feeling as though they had overextended their mobile suit. This deliberate approach positions the game as an inviting entry point rather than a test of patience.

The whole point is to make it accessible for people who have never played a Gundam game before, while still offering enough depth for veteran mech enthusiasts to lose themselves in customization and combat.

What Is Gundam Rogue Orbit About?

Gundam Rogue Orbit casts players as RE-X, the pilot of the Gundam Helix. Alongside his Haro companion Vii, RE-X and the Helix take on hordes of invasive alien creatures known as Apocalypse. The Helix is well-outfitted to handle the threat, and in the build playable at TGS, three assemblies were available: Assault Sword, which featured a lock-on Anchor skill that attached the Helix to enemies; Whip Sword, offering close-range sword attacks paired with an extended whip for longer reach; and Sword Lance, which focused on thrust attacks to strike mid-range while keeping enemies at bay.

Each assembly comes with its own Tactical Skills and AP Units. Tactical Skills are powerful attacks deployed in dramatic fashion, filling the screen with beams, explosions, or frenetic melee strikes. A Tactical Move provides a high-speed movement ability used to evade enemy attacks and flank opponents. AP Units are more limited but offer special abilities such as deployable shields, and pilots can equip two at any given time.

Like any solid character-action game, Gundam Rogue Orbit layers in an even more powerful set of combat skills called Over-Rise. Once pilots fill the gauge by attacking enemies, they can trigger Over-Rise to power up basic attacks and automatically evade enemy strikes for a brief window. The ability can also be activated and burned through a move called AP Unit Burst, unleashing an ultimate attack that saturates the screen with energy blasts aimed at a single foe.

Customization and Release Details

Gundam Rogue Orbit promises high levels of mobile suit customization, both tactical and visual, and the potential depth here is genuinely intriguing. Unfortunately, the Tokyo Game Show demo limited players to pre-built assemblies, though mech game enthusiasts appear to have plenty to tweak and experiment with once the full game launches.
