Xbox has issued an official response to a wave of rumors suggesting that its Game Pass subscription service could strip away day-one access to new first-party games starting in 2027. The statement, provided to reporter Paul Tassi after he sought comment on the claims, declined to confirm or deny any planned restructuring while insisting that previously announced titles will still launch as promised.

The controversy erupted on September 14 when ResetEra user Slayven shared a rumored list of changes reportedly coming to Game Pass next year. According to Slayven, they “know the person” this information comes from and had been “right in the past.” The alleged details paint a dramatic picture of the service’s future: two tiers, one with ads priced at $13 a month and one without ads at $20 a month, alongside the removal of day-one new games as a perk.

The Rumored Changes

According to Slayven’s source, the ad-supported tier would launch at $13 monthly, while the ad-free version would cost $20 a month, or $240 annually. The rumor claims the ad-free plan would be priced $3 less than Game Pass Ultimate specifically because day-one new games are being removed as a perk during February through April. Additional changes reportedly include ending cloud streaming’s inclusion with the base service, turning it into a $6 add-on for 25 hours of use per month.

The list also suggests that family plans would become an additional $6 a month and that online multiplayer would be split into its own subscription costing $11 monthly. Those are significant changes assuming the rumors prove accurate, though longtime leaker NateTheHate noted that while Slayven “clearly has knowledge” about Xbox, these plans remain unconfirmed.

“We regularly test different Game Pass offerings and look at what works best for players in different markets. We don’t have any changes to announce today or plans that have been finalized. There are no changes to previously announced games coming to Game Pass Ultimate on day one.”

A Carefully Worded Response

The company’s statement offered neither a confirmation nor a clear denial of the rumored restructuring. Xbox emphasized that it regularly tests different offerings and has no finalized plans to announce, while reaffirming its commitment to games already announced for day-one release on Game Pass Ultimate. However, the wording leaves considerable room for interpretation, as the firm declined to commit beyond confirming previously announced titles.

The statement did confirm that all games announced as arriving on day one with Game Pass Ultimate will still arrive as announced. Beyond that boundary, Xbox’s response gives the company plenty of wiggle room to potentially stop offering day-one Xbox games after its previous commitments are met. The ambiguity has left fans and analysts debating whether the firm is quietly preparing for a major shift.

Looking Ahead

If the rumors hold any truth, Xbox may be preparing the most significant change to Game Pass yet—a shift that could prompt many subscribers to abandon the service that has provided day-one access to first-party releases like Halo and Gears of War for years. Until then, the company’s official position remains one of measured ambiguity as it continues testing various offerings across different markets.
