Following recent changes at Xbox and the reported transfer of the Halo franchise to Activision, the publisher has reportedly proposed a complete reboot for one of gaming’s most iconic series. According to sources speaking to Rebs Gaming, Activision is exploring a fresh start that would move away from the convoluted lore built up over 25 years through various games and spin-off media. Nothing remains concrete at this stage, but Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games has presented conceptual prototypes for both a free-to-play multiplayer game and a story campaign built in the Infinity Ward engine.

The reports suggest that Sledgehammer Games will lead development on the project, with Activision assembling a dedicated team potentially housed within the studio. The choice of engine marks a notable departure from what fans might expect, as Halo has traditionally been developed using Unreal Engine rather than the proprietary technology behind Call of Duty titles.

A Development Team Takes Shape

The scope of Activision’s ambitions became clearer through details shared by Rebs Gaming, who emphasized that plans are actively evolving. The studio reportedly created prototypes in the Infinity Ward engine, though this does not confirm the final game will use Call of Duty’s technology rather than Unreal Engine.

“Activision is building a development team for the next Halo game, and based on my information, that team could be built within Sledgehammer Games. I’m also told they created the prototypes in the Infinity Ward engine. This doesn’t confirm the game will be developed in Call of Duty’s engine instead of Unreal Engine, but the prototypes indicate it’s definitely possible.”

The reporter added that Activision’s original concept for a campaign project was designed as a soft reboot—one that would not follow Halo Infinite’s story while also avoiding retconning established canon. However, the latest information suggests these initial ideas have been set aside entirely.

“However, it sounds like plans are changing. I’m told they discarded their original project ideas for a full Halo game.”

A Return to Standalone Storytelling

The shift toward a reboot has significant implications for how the franchise handles its narrative. Rebs Gaming noted that this approach makes a sequel to Halo Infinite unlikely, with at least some of Halo’s story set to be rebooted. This development addresses one of the most persistent criticisms leveled against the series after Bungie departed and handed the franchise to 343 Industries/Halo Studios.

Under Bungie’s original stewardship, Halo was known for telling standalone stories that could be enjoyed without additional reading. While Halo books and media served as supplementary material that enriched the franchise, they were not essential to understanding the core narrative. The transition to Halo Studios introduced a period of mandatory homework for fans, where novels, comics, and spin-off games featured crucial plot points and new characters.

This shift became particularly evident with titles like Halo 4, which required outside reading to understand Forerunner history, and Halo 5, which introduced Blue Team. Later entries jettisoned major villains such as the Didact and Jul ‘Mdama, resulting in what many fans considered messy lore with abrupt resets.

Looking Ahead

In related news regarding the franchise’s future, former franchise director Frank O’Connor has offered advice to Activision as it builds the new game, including guidance on pitfalls the publisher should avoid. His involvement highlights the ongoing conversation between longtime creators and those now steering the series in a new direction.

As Activision continues to shape its vision for Halo’s future, fans await official confirmation of these reports. The studio has yet to make any public statements regarding the project, leaving speculation as the primary driver of discussion within the community. Should the reboot proceed as described, it would represent one of the most significant changes to the franchise since Bungie’s departure over two decades ago.

The Halo gaming community now watches closely to see whether Activision’s proposed fresh start will deliver on its promise or leave longtime supporters disappointed. Until official announcements arrive, these reports remain unconfirmed but point toward a potentially transformative moment for one of gaming’s most enduring franchises.
