A Ghost Returns with a Complete Edition
Leading the charge on Oct. 1 is the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, which re-releases Team Ninja’s acclaimed open-world samurai epic almost exactly a year after its original 2025 launch. The most significant addition is the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, which sends the protagonist Atsu to a new region of Ezo where she hunts down men formerly loyal to the Snake, alongside Nagato, a figure from Atsu’s past. The paid package also includes Most Wanted, a roguelike mode featuring new playable characters such as Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai. A companion free update arriving the same day adds new tracks for Watanabe Mode and the Beauty of Yōtei mode, inviting players to soak in Ezo’s stunning and relaxing environments.
Combat Aircraft Take to the Skies
On Oct. 2, fans of aerial combat can celebrate the return of a beloved franchise, as Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve marks the series’ first entry since 2019. Players lead a squadron of fighter pilots through a fictional war brimming with intense dogfights, but the experience extends beyond simply shooting planes out of the sky. As the squadron’s commander, you bond with your crew and make pivotal decisions that shape the narrative. The game has already earned widespread acclaim, with Polygon’s Giovanni Colantonio praising it in his review as landing in the “perfect middle ground between simulation and casual arcade action.”
Blaster-Fight Racing and Supernatural Slashes
Star Wars enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as well. Following the August release of the excellent Star Wars Zero Company, Star Wars: Galactic Racer arrives this week as a roguelike racer that channels the high-octane arcade gameplay of the Burnout series into the Star Wars universe. Vehicles race at breakneck speeds while remaining wildly dangerous, meaning you are just as likely to crash and burn as you are to cross the finish line first. “The races are exciting, the tracks are terrific, and there are plenty of Star Wars touches that fans of the series can nerd out over,” Colantonio wrote in his preview of Galactic Racer.
Also arriving Oct. 13, Soulframe Liang describes the action RPG as a “kungfupunk” game, but that description belongs to a different title entirely. On that same date, Valor Mortis from the studio behind the Ghostrunner games injects a fresh first-person perspective into the Soulslike genre. While most entries in the genre favor third-person action, Valor Mortis delivers intense sword-swinging combat through the eyes of a soldier from Napoleon’s army, revived with supernatural powers after a mysterious plague unleashes grotesque monsters across Europe.
Horror and Kung-Fu Cinema Round Out the Month
As October progresses, survival horror fans get their fix with Anomalith on Oct. 28. Presenting a world that resembles a Resident Evil game rendered in 3D anime style, the game blends survival horror with third-person shooting as teenager Reona searches mysterious Anomaly Zones for her missing friend. Those zones teem with grotesque creatures, and Reona wields monstrous powers of her own to gain an edge in combat. The month closes out on Oct. 29 with Phantom Blade Zero, a motion-captured action RPG whose director movie star Donnie Yen giving it a boost has dubbed a “kungfupunk” title reflecting its wuxia-meets-steampunk aesthetic. Every animation is highly choreographed using wirework stunts to honor the game’s kung fu cinema inspirations. Players guide the assassin Soul, who has 66 days to live, through unraveling a far-reaching conspiracy while wielding over 30 primary weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges against an onslaught of tough bosses.
