Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel Ready Player One is receiving yet another adaptation, this time in graphic novel form, and the creative team behind it says the project lets the story return to its source material in ways the 2018 blockbuster could not. Written by Scott Peterson and illustrated by Meredith Laxton, Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel is being published by Ten Speed Graphic, which has handed Polygon an exclusive look at seven pages introducing the story’s central heroes ahead of the book’s release. The hardcover edition will debut exclusively at Target on Oct. 6 before reaching all other book retailers on March 2, 2027.

The original novel became an enormous hit, drawing readers into a dystopian adventure steeped in nostalgic ’80s references and standing as one of the earliest prominent examples of the LitRPG boom. Set in a near future where humanity spends most of its time inside a virtual world known as the OASIS, the story follows Wade Watts, a young hunter chasing the legacy of the simulation’s late creator, James Donovan Halliday. Halliday has bequeathed control of the OASIS to whoever can find a hidden set of keys that unlock a series of increasingly difficult gates, a treasure hunt that demands an encyclopedic command of Generation X music, film, and video games.

A Cinematic Adaptation That Had to Cut Corners

Translating those references to the big screen proved far more complicated than Cline and co-writer Zak Penn anticipated when they adapted the book for Steven Spielberg adapted Cline’s book in 2018. Although the resulting screenplay remained packed with nostalgia and action, licensing restrictions forced the filmmakers to alter or drop much of the novel’s specific pop-culture content. The team famously omitted a challenge inspired by the classic Dungeons & Dragons module Tomb of Horrors, and swapped out a sequence originally based on Blade Runner for one set inside The Shining, among other changes.

Those compromises were understandable given the legal realities of a Hollywood production, but they left a portion of the novel’s identity on the cutting room floor. The new graphic novel adaptation aims to correct that, giving the creative team the freedom to render Cline’s references exactly as written without worrying about the licensing fees and runtime limits that shaped the film.

“As a longtime reader and lover of graphic novels, I’m incredibly excited to have Ready Player One adapted to this unique medium, because it allows the story to be retold visually, through a marriage of prose and stunning artwork that is also freed from the running time and licensing constraints we faced when I helped Steven Spielberg adapt my novel into his blockbuster film,” Cline told Polygon in an email statement. “I’m incredibly proud of our movie, and I truly believe we made the best possible film adaptation of my novel. And now I’ve been blessed enough to have lightning strike twice, because I think this is the best possible graphic novel adaptation of Ready Player One.”

Returning to the OASIS Through New Eyes

The graphic novel, written by Scott Peterson, known for his work on Batgirl and Batman: Gotham Adventures, and illustrated by Meredith Laxton, brings the heroes of the OASIS to life for a new audience. In the excerpt shared with Polygon, readers are introduced to Wade, Art3mis, and Aech, the three central hunters whose fates are intertwined with the race for Halliday’s Easter eggs. While Wade remains determined to solve the puzzle on his own, he will ultimately need the help of his fellow hunters to stand against a corporation intent on seizing control of the OASIS and monetizing it.

The seven-page preview offers fans a first look at how Peterson and Laxton have chosen to visualize the novel’s most iconic moments, balancing fidelity to Cline’s text with the visual storytelling demands of the medium. For readers who have long wished the film had preserved more of the book’s specific references, the graphic novel represents an opportunity to experience the story closer to how Cline originally imagined it.

Looking Ahead

Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel will arrive at Target stores on Oct. 6 as an exclusive launch edition, with a wider release across all book retailers scheduled for March 2, 2027. The staggered rollout mirrors the strategy publishers often use to drive initial sales through a single retailer before expanding to a broader market. As anticipation builds for the book’s release, fans of the franchise are watching closely to see how the creative team handles the novel’s dense web of references and whether the graphic novel can capture the same sense of wonder that made the original a cultural phenomenon.

With the film already a decade old and the graphic novel still months away, the project also raises questions about the future of the Ready Player One franchise and whether Cline’s richly referenced world will continue to expand across new mediums. For now, the graphic novel stands as the most faithful adaptation of the novel to date, offering both longtime readers and newcomers a chance to dive back into the OASIS through a fresh and visually stunning lens.
