At this year’s BlizzCon, where Blizzard Entertainment unveiled a wave of ambitious future projects, game director Brent Gibson moved to reassure a nervous community that Diablo 4 will continue to receive support long after the studio’s next entry, Diablo 5, launches. Responding to concerns that the announcement of a new sequel would strand the current online action RPG, Gibson told Icy Veins that Blizzard intends to keep releasing new seasons for Diablo 4 for as long as players continue to show up — mirroring the long-term approach the studio has taken with Diablo 2 and Diablo 3.
The reassurance came in the wake of a sprawling BlizzCon presentation that laid out Blizzard’s plans for the next decade. Among the reveals was a first trailer for a new StarCraft game set for 2030, alongside a cinematic teaser for a new Diablo that carries a 2029 release date. But it was the Diablo announcement that drew the most attention — and the most anxiety — from the franchise’s longtime fanbase.
