Matthew Lillard’s Mr. Charles: The Best Performance of 2026 Deserves a Second Life After Daredevil’s Cancellation

Daredevil: Born Again has been canceled after its third season, and as the Marvel streaming series prepares to wind down, one actor’s standout turn is being championed for a future beyond the show. Matthew Lillard’s Mr. Charles — a CIA operative who has quietly become the revival’s most memorable supporting character — is making a case for himself to survive the series’ abrupt conclusion. When the original Netflix Daredevil was axed in 2018, fans clamored for the character’s return, and Marvel eventually greenlit the revival, which debuted in March 2025 with a second season a year later. But in keeping with the studio’s recent slash-and-burn approach to television, the show will end after season 3, meaning many of its supporting cast may never appear again.

While Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin are expected to survive in some capacity — Cox has even intimated that he would be happy to play Daredevil into old age — the fate of the ensemble’s secondary players is far less certain. Into that uncertainty steps Mr. Charles, a character who has become the show’s most entertaining and, some would argue, most essential presence.

The Man Who Chews the Scene

Mr. Charles is first introduced in the season 2 premiere, watching a news report about The Morning Star, a cargo ship carrying weapons into the Red Hook free port in Brooklyn that has just sunk in the East River. He receives a call to investigate from an unseen caller, then destroys the phone. He is next seen during a tense exchange between Mayor Fisk and state officials in the mayor’s office, strolling in loudly chewing food from a street vendor while the officials struggle to identify him. Later, he appears in a meeting with Fisk and Fisk’s wife Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), where they discuss salvaging the weapons aboard The Morning Star, revealing an arrangement between Fisk and Mr. Charles’ superiors to smuggle arms through the free port.

Throughout the rest of the season, Mr. Charles — revealed to be a CIA agent working in league with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) — pops up sporadically. When Jessica Jones’ home is raided by a special ops team, she confronts him about it, discovering that he is her only access to Luke Cage, who is conducting shady overseas operations for the CIA. His best scenes, however, are all with Fisk, the rare character who possesses the ability to put pressure on the Kingpin.

A Clash of Styles, Not Just Power

The dynamic between Fisk and Mr. Charles is defined less by raw power and more by clashing styles, which is precisely what makes the scenes so compelling. D’Onofrio plays Fisk as a ball of tension — a clenched fist in command of every one of his many pauses while he speaks, until he lets loose. Fisk is impeccably dressed and relentlessly formal. Lillard’s Mr. Charles commands the same degree of power, but with a dress-down casualness that allows him to curse like a sailor and put his feet up on the coffee table in the mayor’s office. Fisk intimidates everyone, but not Mr. Charles, and it is that friction that makes the scenes so entertaining, especially as Fisk’s pent-up rage visibly escalates in his presence.

The scenes brought something the revival has been severely lacking: humor — particularly since the decision was made to kill Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) at the beginning of the first season. While Daredevil: Born Again has been largely a good show, it does grow a bit dull at times. Lillard is an absolute dynamo, chewing the scenery in the perfect way.

That sentiment, expressed by Cox, underscores the stakes for the supporting cast as the series approaches its finale. For Mr. Charles, the question is whether his charisma and comedic timing will earn him a place in the show’s final act.

Looking Ahead

By the end of the season, it is revealed that Mr. Charles has recruited Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) for special CIA operations. That thread might be picked up in season 3, but it may not — it depends on how much room remains in a plotline that also features Daredevil in prison and some sort of reunion with the Defenders. If there isn’t room for Lillard, that is acceptable; shoehorning a great performance where it doesn’t belong would be a disservice to the character.

Still, fans hope to see Mr. Charles again. Since he works for Val, there is a chance he could appear in a future Avengers movie, though his screen time there is unlikely to be substantial. Alternatively, a to-be-announced Daredevil movie could feature a reunion with Wilson Fisk — a scenario that would give audiences more of the antagonistic Fisk/Mr. Charles dynamic before Fisk decides to crush Mr. Charles’ head in a car door, or something like that.
