Obsidian Entertainment Reorganized Under Bethesda in Microsoft’s Franchise-Driven Restructure

September 23, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Microsoft has quietly reshuffled one of gaming’s most beloved studios, placing Obsidian Entertainment under the umbrella of Bethesda Game Studios as part of a sweeping company-wide reorganization. The move, announced on Sept. 22, comes in the wake of a turbulent year for Xbox, which earlier in July laid off 1,600 employees and divested from several acclaimed studios, including Double Fine, with further cuts expected throughout the fiscal year. While the reorganization raises questions about the studio’s future creative freedom, Bethesda Game Studios head Jill Braff insists the change is “primarily a change in reporting structure” and that Obsidian will retain the creative identity that made it distinct. The announcement, detailed in a memo obtained by IGN, also signals a broader strategic pivot for Xbox toward its existing franchises amid what CEO Asha Sharma has called a major company-wide “reset.”

For fans of Obsidian, the news carries particular weight given the studio’s storied history with the Fallout franchise. The developer is best known for crafting the critically acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas, a title widely regarded as one of the most celebrated entries in the series. With Bethesda Game Studios set to continue leading the Fallout franchise while Obsidian’s team works closely on the studio’s upcoming Fallout project, the pairing has generated a wave of optimism. Yet the memo’s framing of the arrangement as a structural realignment rather than a creative merger has left some observers cautious about what the shift means for the studio’s independence.

A Structural Shift, Not a Creative Merger

Braff’s memo, addressed to employees across Microsoft’s studios, publishing, and business teams, emphasizes continuity over disruption. She noted that she had spent six years getting to know Obsidian’s founder and creative director Feargus Urquhart and his team, expressing “great respect for what they’ve built.” The studio will remain led by its existing leadership, with the only change being that it will now report to Braff rather than its previous management.

Today’s announcement is primarily a change in reporting structure. The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work. Feargus and the Obsidian leadership team will continue to lead Obsidian, with the studio reporting to me. Bethesda Game Studios will continue to lead the Fallout franchise. Together, the teams will build on their longstanding relationship and the early work already underway on a new Fallout project, with more to share in the months ahead.

Braff also addressed the broader workforce, clarifying that the company is not resetting its roadmap or redirecting teams’ current focus. “We’re not resetting our roadmap or asking teams to change what they’re focused on,” she wrote, promising to take time to understand how the studios can best support one another and continue communicating as the reorganization progresses.

The memo’s language has been received largely as reassuring by the community, with many fans relieved that Obsidian will not be absorbed or dismantled. The studio’s track record reinforces confidence in its survival: over roughly the past 15 years, Obsidian has delivered an impressive slate of titles, including Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, The Outer Worlds and its sequel, Pentiment, Avowed, Grounded, and Tyranny. By contrast, Bethesda has released comparatively few games, with Starfield standing as its only non-sequel or rerelease in recent memory.

Looking Ahead

Despite the reassurances, the memo contains a revealing line that underscores the strategic reality behind the reorganization. Braff stated that the Obsidian restructuring is designed to support the “franchise-led model” Microsoft is increasingly leaning into. This aligns with Xbox’s broader “reset” initiative, under which CEO Asha Sharma has signaled the company will concentrate on its existing series, implying that new intellectual property will not be a priority going forward.

Consequently, while Obsidian appears likely to survive, its future may be constrained to sequels to Bethesda’s own games or follow-ups to its established franchises such as The Outer Worlds, Pillars of Eternity, and Grounded. With Xbox navigating significant financial and operational challenges, the industry may well see a continuation of the same proven formulas rather than bold new ventures. For now, the partnership between Braff’s Bethesda Game Studios and Feargus Urquhart’s Obsidian offers a promising path forward for the Fallout franchise, with more details expected in the months ahead.
