Horror icon Bruce Campbell, known for his iconic role as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise, recently shared a candid update on his battle with cancer. In an interview, he discussed his prognosis and emphasized the importance of focusing on living life to the fullest despite the challenges.
A Candid Conversation
During an appearance on The Adam Carolla Show earlier this week, Campbell revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer. While acknowledging that it is “treatable” but “not curable,” he shared his five-year prognosis. This statement prompted further questions from the host, leading to a more detailed explanation from the actor.
The actor announced his cancer diagnosis earlier this year, indicating that convention appearances and other work would take a back seat to treatment. He previously described himself as “a tough old son-of-a-bitch” and expressed optimism about his future.
Focusing on Quality of Life
Campbell acknowledged the potential for medical advancements and longer survival rates, but stressed the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and prioritizing quality of life. He cautioned against getting “lost in the rabbit hole” of cancer statistics and support groups, emphasizing the need to avoid dwelling on negative information.
“You can go down a massive rabbit hole,” he continued. “The cancer rabbit hole is enormous. You can go into focus groups of 10,000 guys who have the exact thing you have. I won’t touch it with a 10-foot pole.”
He added, “They say there’s a whole mental component. You start getting all this bad news, and you’re starting breakfast with a st sandwich with a side of what-the-fk for a couple of months as it all comes in. Then, you deal with it, and you have to make this decision of, ‘OK, but do I have to stop everything that I’m doing because of this?’ Well, no.”
Looking Ahead
Currently, Campbell is promoting his new film, Ernie & Emma, which he directed, wrote, and starred in. The film follows a man who embarks on a journey to scatter his wife’s ashes after her passing. The tagline encapsulates the film’s theme: “‘Til death do us part – and a little longer.”
“I crack up at the people who are the ‘How old can I get? How can I change my lifestyle so I live the longest?'” Campbell said earlier in the new interview. “It’s funny; the more people obsess about that crap, I’m like, ‘You’re not really living. You just have a new hobby that you’re obsessing over.’ What is the quality of these extra years? So, you get five more years – so what are you doing with those five years? Obsessing about the five years, or are you actually doing something?”
In a follow-up post on X/Twitter, Campbell reiterated his sentiment: “Cancer is all the rage, but I’ve said plenty and I need to get back to the business of living.” He also recently confirmed that he will not be returning to play Ash Williams.
