The long-awaited remake of Fate/Extra Record, originally released on the PSP, is getting another shot at life after a tumultuous development period. A new team and publisher are stepping in to try and salvage this cult-favorite RPG for modern consoles.
A Rocky Road to Remake
The development of Fate/Extra Record has been plagued by delays since its announcement in 2020. Initially slated for a 2024 release, the game faced an indefinite delay earlier this year when its original publisher, Bandai Namco Entertainment, pulled support, forcing the cancellation of Japanese pre-orders. This week’s news marks a significant turning point, with Aniplex taking over from Bandai.
New Team, New Hope
The development reins have also been passed from Type Moon Studio BB to Meteorise, the team behind the upcoming 2025 anime fighting game Bleach: Rebirth of Souls. This change comes after a major restructuring within Type Moon Studio BB, including the departure of director Kazuya Nino. In a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Nino confirmed his departure, citing personal reasons and taking responsibility for the current situation. He also expressed respect for the remaining development team and assured fans that the game will meet their expectations.
The original PSP title, Fate/Extra, was well-received upon its release in 2010. The Fate franchise itself is known for its numerous adaptations across anime, video games, and manga, transforming what began as a hobbyist development team into a media conglomerate. The remake was intended to bring this beloved experience to modern consoles with updated visuals and gameplay.

The nature of the game’s troubled development is unusual in the Japanese gaming industry. While the future remains uncertain, the involvement of Aniplex and Meteorise offers a renewed sense of hope for fans eager to experience this cult-classic RPG on modern hardware.
