Bungie’s Massive Office Space: A Sign of Lean Times for Destiny Dev?

Remember Bungie’s ambitious expansion plans just a few years ago? Now, it seems the studio is looking to sublease its sprawling headquarters, raising questions about its current state and future direction. Is this a strategic move or a sign of deeper issues within the company?

A Turn-Key Production Facility

After a massive 2021 office expansion, Bungie is now trying to sublease its 211,000 square foot headquarters
Bungie’s expansive headquarters offers a “turn-key” production facility with expected office fixtures, a dedicated lobby, gym and exercise facilities (including a rock climbing wall), a motion-capture studio, a cafe, catering space, and a private exterior patio.

According to a recent report, Bungie is seeking renters for its 210,984 square foot headquarters, touting it as a “turn-key” production facility. The listing highlights amenities like a dedicated lobby, state-of-the-art gym (complete with a rock climbing wall!), a motion-capture studio, a cafe, catering space, and even a private outdoor patio. This paints a picture of a high-end workspace designed for large-scale game development.

While the brochure didn’t explicitly name Bungie, confirmation from the studio itself verified that they are actively pursuing sublease options. “Bungie is exploring options to sublease its campus in Bellevue, Washington,” a statement provided to press confirmed. “The studio transitioned to a digital-first model several years ago, and this move reflects the team’s evolving workplace needs and the effectiveness of its remote collaboration. Bungie will continue to maintain a physical office presence in Bellevue.”

This shift comes after a period of significant change for Bungie. Following Sony’s acquisition, the studio embarked on an ambitious hiring spree, adding hundreds of developers to work on multiple projects simultaneously. However, as the impact of the pandemic waned and industry revenues began to decline, these plans proved unsustainable.

A series of layoffs followed, impacting a significant portion of Bungie’s workforce. The next round was reportedly triggered by concerns that Bungie leadership had “overstated their studio’s financial prospects to Sony,” leading to a dire fiscal outlook. Even the success of Destiny 2’s Final Shape expansion couldn’t fully offset these challenges.

As turmoil mounted, key figures began to depart, culminating in Pete Parsons’ departure in 2025. Bungie staff ultimately suffered another round of layoffs in June 2026, with many members of the Destiny team losing their jobs as the game moved towards the end of its live service.

At one point, Bungie employed over 1,600 people. In July 2024, Parsons stated that the studio had significantly reduced its workforce. The recent layoff notice indicated a further reduction in staff. This means that if all remaining Bungie employees were to gather in their headquarters, there would be fewer than 600 people to fill the massive 211,000 square feet.

The master lease for the property runs through September 30, 2035. This situation raises questions about Bungie’s future and whether this move is a strategic adjustment or a reflection of deeper challenges within the company. Only time will tell what the next chapter holds for the studio behind Destiny.
