The gaming world is buzzing after developer Saber Interactive addressed concerns about the use of generative AI in its upcoming title, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3. Following a wave of backlash surrounding the studio’s use of AI in “Rideshare Stimulator,” Saber has made it unequivocally clear that generative AI will not be part of the development process for Space Marine 3.

The AI Controversy

The controversy began when Saber Interactive confirmed the use of generative AI in “Rideshare Stimulator,” including speech and text generation in its Free Ride mode. This sparked immediate concerns among fans eagerly awaiting Space Marine 3, especially given the heated debate surrounding AI’s role in game development.

Saber CEO Matthew Karch even found himself embroiled in a public exchange with former “Rideshare Stimulator” writer Stella Sacco, who claimed to have been “replaced” by ChatGPT. While Karch denied these claims, the incident fueled further anxiety within the gaming community.

Games Workshop’s Stance

Adding to the tension, Games Workshop, the owner of the Warhammer 40,000 IP, has taken a firm stance against the use of AI in its content creation and design processes. This position was reiterated multiple times, including an investigation into marketing gaffes that some suspected were AI-generated.

“As noted in our November 2025 half year report, we are not being complacent on the topic,” said Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree. “We have made a few human errors on the depiction of our products in our product marketing in the year, they were investigated fully to ensure that AI had not been used and that all our staff are following our internal policies.”

During an interview with Saber development chief Tim Willits at gamescom, I pressed for clarification on the use of generative AI in Space Marine 3. The answer was definitive: “There is absolutely no generative AI in Space Marine 3 or Hellraiser or Stuntman or Turok or Jurassic Park, or Wick.”

Willits emphasized that Saber follows the lead of each license owner it works with and confirmed that Space Marine 3 will be entirely free of AI-generated dialogue, voices, and artwork. This news will undoubtedly be welcomed by Warhammer 40,000’s passionate fanbase, who are particularly vigilant about maintaining the integrity of official artwork.

The Future of AI in Gaming

While Saber is committed to avoiding AI in its licensed titles, Willits expressed a general interest in the potential of AI in game development. He believes that the technology is still in its early stages and that its true capabilities have yet to be fully realized.

“If anyone tells you that they have it figured out, they don’t,” he insisted. “It’s going to take a couple years and things will settle out and we’ll figure it out.”

What’s Next?

While there is no release window for Space Marine 3, development is actively underway at Saber Interactive. In the meantime, fans can continue to enjoy Space Marine 2, which will receive a third year of DLC support. This commitment to quality and adherence to Games Workshop’s vision should reassure players that Space Marine 3 will be a true celebration of the beloved Warhammer 40,000 universe.
